The Rachel Carson Council (RCC), a national environmental organization, seeks an outstanding campus coordinator for its Rachel Carson Council Campus Network (RCCN) of nearly 50 campuses and several thousand activists, including faculty, students, staff, and administrators. The RCCN Coordinator will work with the Assistant Director of Policy and Programs at the Washington, DC Capitol Hill Office. The ideal candidate will be deeply committed to the mission of the RCC, to environmental and justice education, organizing, and advocacy.

In addition to outstanding interpersonal, communication, and advocacy skills, the RCC seeks someone who has shown leadership in environmental issues on campus – including students, faculty and administrators – with the ability to adapt easily to rapid change, uncertainty, and to work effectively with a diverse range of people. The RCCN position is designed for an environmental advocate who is eager to demonstrate initiative and leadership in a small, but highly respected and growing organization.

Mission: The Rachel Carson Council, founded in 1965, is the environmental organization envisioned by Rachel Carson to carry out her work after her death. We promote Carson’s ecological ethic that combines scientific concern with the environment and human health with a sense of wonder and reverence for all forms of life in order to build a more sustainable, just and peaceful future.

Issues: The RCC educates, organizes, and lobbies around environmental and climate justice issues with emphasis on clean and renewable energy, opposition to fossil fuels, and sustainable and healthy alternatives to industrial animal agriculture. The RCC also works to reduce and eliminate pesticides and other toxic chemicals. As part of the legacy of Rachel Carson, the RCC further works collaboratively, where possible, against nuclear weapons and power.

Job description: The RCCN Coordinator works to expand and deepen the Rachel Carson Council Network and to recruit and engage faculty and students in effective national and statewide environmental engagement and advocacy. Current key issues include climate and environmental justice, elimination of and divestment from fossil fuels, promotion of clean and renewable energy, and opposition to industrial animal agriculture and biomass incineration.
