Tacoma Climate and Clean Energy Campaign Organizer (Contractor)

Can you envision a healthier, more just Tacoma? Have you been engaged in environmental or social advocacy in Tacoma? Does the idea of supporting the community and business efforts to transition off fossil fuels towards clean energy jobs for more Tacoma residents inspire you?

Washington Environmental Council is seeking a campaign organizer contractor to work in Tacoma to build an alliance across environmentalists, labor, businesses, social equity groups/interests, and tribal nations for climate and clean energy work. The goal of the work is to build trust and relationships to support a cross-sector dialogue on what is possible for Tacoma’s communities and economy:

  • Convene conversations, establish space for open dialogue, and build trust across different sectors with a common focus on sustainable, clean and renewable energy jobs in the greater Tacoma area
    • Establish relationships and connect community leaders across different interests and perspectives (e.g. equity, businesses, tribal nations, etc.)
    • Identify common ground and areas of disagreement
    • Identify projects, programs, and policies to unify around
  • This work will engage with the Sub Area Planning process for the Tacoma Tideflats but not be dictated by that timeline.

This campaign organizer contractor will work for and in close collaboration with WEC and build relationships between and with existing community groups, businesses, labor groups, and community of color organizations. Additionally, the organizer contractor will reach out to the Puyallup Tribe and include the Tribe in ways the Tribe wants.

Compensation:

This contract is for a total of $20,000 for time and travel, and is estimated to be approximately 15 hours per week. This position has a flexible start date in September 2018 and goes through June 2019.

Responsibilities

Deliverables:

  • Develop an outreach plan, including identifying community leaders and key members of the Tacoma community across environmental, social justice, tribal nation, labor and business interests
  • Conduct outreach to community leaders and organizations, according to the outreach plan
  • Convene conversations between community leaders, facilitate and organize community conversations, and seek common ground on work towards a transition to sustainable, clean and renewable energy
  • Establish relationships and connect community leaders across different interests and perspectives (e.g. equity, businesses, tribal nations, etc.)
  • Identify common ground and areas of disagreement
  • Identify projects, programs, and policies to unify around
  • Build a contact list of people and entities interested in this work

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Knowledge and experience with Tacoma and Pierce County, including political and community dynamics
  • At least 2 – 3 years of organizing or related experience implementing successful grassroots advocacy or electoral campaigns. Campus or community organizing of any kind can meet this requirement.
  • Experience planning and facilitating community meetings and/or participatory planning processes
  • Commitment to open dialogue and principles of racial, social and economic justice.
  • Demonstrated ability in outreach and communications.
  • Ability to take initiative, develop ideas and turn them into action.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and with a team in a dynamic environment.
  • A valid driver’s license and ability to travel to different parts of the greater Tacoma area, and to WEC’s office in Seattle as needed.

Desirable Qualifications/Experience

  • Relationships with businesses, labor union, community organizations, social justice groups, environmental groups, tribes
  • Familiarity with City of Tacoma public processes
  • Familiarity with green economy / workforce development concepts
  • Bilingual abilities
