Immediate opening for a lead hydrologist in northwest California
Humboldt Redwoods Company (direct link to website: www.hrcllc.com) manages nearly 1000 km2 of prime timber land, and they maintain a very extensive monitoring program with nearly 20 continuous stream gauges (including turbidity and ISCO samplers for determining supended sediment loads), and they also collect a range of other stream channel and geomorphic data. The lead hydrologist supervises and conducts this work along with a hydrologic technician. She/he also provides key input to a range of management and restoration projects, and interactions with regulatory agencies. This position offers a tremendous range of activities, and an ideal applicant should have experience with data loggers and sensors, field measurements, total station surveys, have good computer and statistical skills, and be capable of organizing, maintaining, and analyzing large datasets.

Job Specific Information
I. SUMMARY
Provide expertise and leadership in the field of forest hydrology relative to understanding watershed trends and effects of forest management on sediment, temperature, and other aspects of water quality and aquatic habitat across 200,000 acres of privately owned and managed forest lands in Humboldt County, CA.
II. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Collect and supervise the collection of scientific data for hydrologic and aquatic sciences projects
• Perform scientific analysis, especially related to long-term sediment and hydrology trends, and develop and write technical
reports documenting data evaluation findings and, where appropriate, recommendations
• Prepare statistical data evaluations, tables, figures and graphs
• Develop scientific information in support of the HRC watershed analysis program
• Support forestry staff with technical expertise in hydrology and aquatic issues
• Demonstrate strong critical thinking capabilities and a flexible approach to problem solving
• Coordinate HCP and WQ monitoring and permitting requirements between Forest Science, Roads, and Forestry departments
relative to erosion control
• Assist with restoration projects and related grant proposals
• Provide direction for fishery and water quality regulatory issues
• Provide support for HRC in-stream gravel extraction projects
• Represent HRC with fishery and watershed groups, agencies and individuals
• Work as a leader and integral part of the HRC team
• Provide direction and support for HRC water drafting, permitting and monitoring
• Directly supervise Hydrologist(s) and other staff positions involved in implementing HRC’s Hydrology Monitoring Program and
Watershed Analysis related projects in accordance with Company policies and applicable laws
• Coach employees for attainment of Company and individual goals and objectives in accordance with Company guidelines and
performance management system
III. QUALIFICATIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
• Minimum Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.), Master of Science (M.S.) preferred, in Forest or Watershed Hydrology or related subject from four-year college or university and minimum 2-3 years of work experience in Hydrology or other related field. Minimum of one year of supervisory experience in the hydrology field is desired.
• Experience with streamflow measurements, turbidimeters, sediment sampling, surveying with total station, and dataloggers required.
• Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Suite, Python programming, database systems, statistical software (including R), and GIS.
• Effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.
• Knowledge of advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations and permutations as well as mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance,
correlation techniques, sampling theory and factor analysis.
• Must maintain and carry a valid California driver license and remain eligible and capable of operating company vehicles including
automobiles, trucks and 4-wheel drive vehicles in accordance with company policy guidelines.
• Frequently required to sit, walk, walk on steep, difficult terrain, and in streambeds and occasionally required to stand; use hands
to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and communicate.
• The employee is frequently required to use a keyboard for extended periods of time while looking at a computer monitor.
• The employee is regularly exposed to outside adverse weather and field conditions.
