Research, develop, implement, and coordinate programs to promote sound environmental stewardship by citizens and businesses regarding natural resources, which may include urban forest restoration, surface water, solid waste/recycling, and drinking water. Additional work may include collaboration with others implementing a variety of environmental programs including management of forests and other natural resources on public lands, sustainable building, alternative transportation, and sustainable development.
Specific Work Assignments
- Empower Kirkland residents in environmental stewardship and in taking positive actions for water quality and watershed health.
- Play a key role in developing a grant-funded project to educate property owners regarding stormwater issues and management on their property.
- Assist property owners in identifying appropriate stormwater management projects for their site.
- Assist with stormwater-related education and outreach programs
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
- Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of current environmental stewardship and education/outreach methods, strategies and programs.
- Knowledge of current literature, trends, and developments in the fields of solid waste/recycling, water quality protection, urban forest restoration, fish habitat protection/restoration, sustainable development, water conservation issues, and other local environmental issues.
- Knowledge of current methods for monitoring environmental conditions.
- Ability to speak with large groups of people.
- Ability to work with a diverse community in preparing for emergency events.
- Ability to interpret data to analyze community prevention and preparedness needs.
- Demonstrated skill teaching children and adults.

Special Note
2017 salary rates listed. This position is a full-time, fully benefited, two year temporary assignment.

Hours of Work
To be determined within core business hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday.
Minimum Qualifications
Associates degree in a related field and two years teaching/training experience. Possession of a valid Washington State Driver’s License or the ability to secure a reasonable transportation accommodation to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in education, journalism, communications, environmental studies, natural resources, environmental education, public policy, community planning, or related field. Two years program/project management experience in stewardship/education/outreach or a related field. Civic or community organization experience.
Working Conditions & Physical Activities
Duties may be performed in a variety of settings and conditions, both in a typical office setting as well as field situations (i.e., in buildings, outside, sitting, or standing, etc.). Duties may include working outside in natural areas (streams, hillsides) with uneven terrain under varying weather conditions. Position may require climbing ladders and lifting of up to 20 pounds.
