Position Summary:Lead the direction of the sustainability program for Virginia Tech Dining Services and Housing & Residence Life. Program development will encompass evaluating any current practices having an environmental impact; researching and evaluating options to reduce that impact including feasibility; cost and overall campus impact; and leading the implementation of new programs and practices. Provide guidance and support for staff on sustainability programs while taking into account the needs of a foodservice operation. Components of the program to include (but not limited to):
- Strategic planning for sustainability programming for Dining Services and Housing & Residence Life.
- Increase sourcing of local and sustainable foods campus-wide and at The Farms & Fields Project the signature sustainable dining venue in our portfolio.
- Manage and expand composting and waste tracking, reduction, and diversion programs.
Represent Dining Services and Housing & Residence Life on campus and within the community to facilitate strong partnerships which further departmental sustainability program goals.Required Qualifications:
- Knowledge of environmental management policies, issues, initiatives, and sustainability practices, particularly with regard to sustainable food systems and related waste management.
- Knowledge of higher education dining services issues and/or operations.
- B.S.or. B.A. degree and/or equivalent related experience in a sustainability advocacy field.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral.
- Ability to work with diverse groups and build partnerships.
- Strong analytical, technical, and planning skills.
- Ability to work independently and as a team leader and member. Teamwork and diplomacy skills a must.
- Ability to develop new projects and institutionalize new sustainability efforts within an academic setting.
- Comprehensive knowledge of Windows environments, Microsoft Office including PowerPoint, Excel, Project Management, SharePoint and Outlook.
- Experience actively managing social media for outreach purposes.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with dining services sustainable food systems in higher education.
- B.S. or M.S in related sustainability, environmental, Civic Agriculture or other comparable field
- Experience with sustainability initiatives in university housing.(potential)
- Experience with the LEED certification process.
- Experience with contract negotiations.
- Experience in grant, award and professional writing.
- Exceptional public speaking and communications skills
- Working knowledge of AASHE STARS and other accreditation programs.
