Employment Dates: January 28–June 15, 2019 (20 weeks)
Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is an 1100-acre coastal sanctuary on Cape Cod with extensive school, public and camp education programs. We are seeking experienced and enthusiastic Environmental Educators to join our staff for the winter and spring seasons.
Responsibilities
During the spring, the Environmental Educator will teach introductory level programs on local ecology to school groups in classrooms, on-site at the sanctuary, and off-site. School groups range from grades K-12, but are typically Middle School aged children. This work will take place at our sanctuary outside on trails through the salt marsh, tidal flats, and forest, as well as inside classrooms at local schools and other locations. The Environmental Educator will lead interpretative nature walks, engage students in exploration and inquiry activities, and identify local wildlife species. This position is also responsible for being a lead teacher in our four-day Vacation Adventures programs in February and April. Training is provided, but previous experience in science and/or environmental education is desirable.
The work week is primarily Monday through Friday and hours will vary from 20-30 hours/week, dependent on programming and projects. On-site, shared housing is available.
Qualifications
Ability to develop good rapport and positive relationships with students, teachers, and other educators.
Experience in environmental education and/or teaching children in classroom settings or in the outdoors.
The ability to relate complex concepts to a diverse range of people and ages.
BS or BA degree.
Strong work ethic, love of nature, desire to work outside, willingness to learn, and sense of humor.
This position requires successful completion of a CORI and SORI check.
Desired qualifications:
Working knowledge of Cape Cod natural history and wildlife.
Coastal ecology knowledge and bird identification skills are preferred.
First Aid and CPR certification.
