YOUR POSITION WITH TNC
The Grassroots Organizer (GO) implements strategies to build local volunteer leadership in support of the Conservancy’s initiative to protect drinking water for people by securing public funding to protect and restore land in the Mississippi headwaters region of Minnesota. The GO will support the Conservancy’s goals through interactions with coalition partners, community leaders, and local elected officials. This position will be located in Minneapolis, Minnesota and work in the Metro area.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Grassroots Organizer develops efforts to mobilize constituents on legislative priorities related to the Conservancy’s work in the Mississippi headwaters region. They will engage in efforts to help the public understand the threats to clean water in the region. They will identify and recruit leaders through 1:1 meetings, phone banks, door to door canvassing and events. They will coach leaders in the skills and attitudes needed to speak out for change, organize effective teams that can lead grassroots efforts and work with leaders to organize effective actions to build a base of support. They will work with partner organizations and some government agencies. The GO must be able to organize their time well and manage diverse activities to meet deadlines. This position requires a valid driver’s license, a good driving record and the ability to work some evenings and weekends. This is a full-time regular position with benefits including health and dental insurance, paid time off, flexible schedules and more.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
Will supervise volunteers.
Limited financial responsibility which may include, completing travel expense reports. May purchase equipment and supplies as provided for in budget and in consultation with supervisor.
May provide assistance with preparation of program materials including presentations, memos, and other communications.
Works independently, working with supervisor on complex matters as needed.
Makes independent decisions within the scope of work assignments.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school degree and 6 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Fluency in English spoken and written.
Experience writing and editing promotional and informational material.
Experience presenting to and communicating with internal and external audiences.
Experience with Microsoft office suite, including databases, spreadsheets and presentation software.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural experience strongly preferred.
Experience with door to door canvassing, phone canvassing, and/or digital organizing.
Experience building networks, facilitating effective meetings, and building capacity.
Experience, coursework, or other training in grassroots organizing, public policy, government relations, urban farming, social work or similar field.
Self-starting, independent worker who can thrive in a decentralized organization with minimal oversight.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Experience developing volunteer leadership in the context of a campaign or initiative.
