Virginia Tech actively seeks a broad spectrum of candidates to join our community in preparing leaders for the world.

Position Summary:

A postdoctoral position is available in the lab of Dr. Meryl Mims in the Department of Biological Sciences at Virginia Tech. This position is part of ongoing laboratory and collaborative efforts to bridge the roles of population, community, and landscape ecology in the conservation of freshwater organisms, particularly anurans. The successful candidate will build upon a rich suite of anuran population data and hydrological analyses of small ponds in the southwestern United States, with the possibility of extending this work to additional regions – particularly the southeastern United States. The successful applicant will work closely with managers and a team of collaborators from multiple institutions. The scope of the work is dynamic and could encompass one or a number of focal areas, including: population and landscape genetics/genomics, remote sensing and its application to fine scale temporal analysis of aquatic habitats, community dynamics and their relationship to predictability and seasonality of aquatic habitats, and multispecies inference and vulnerability assessments. The successful applicant will join a growing community of ecologists and evolutionary biologists and their teams, many with a freshwater focus, here at VT.

Required Qualifications:

We are seeking a creative and motivated Ph.D. with expertise in freshwater population, community, and/or landscape ecology, with a strong track record of collaboration, leadership, communication skills, quantitative skills, and peer-reviewed publications. The successful applicant will collaborate closely with graduate students, managers, and faculty from multiple institutions. Applicants must be willing to travel to Arizona for fieldwork for multiple months at a time (during the summer) and occasionally for off-season trips as well. Note that the Ph.D. degree must be completed prior to starting the position at VT.

Preferred Qualifications:

The scope of the project has some flexibility; strong preference will be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following: population genetics/genomics, remote sensing, and anuran and/or macroinvertebrate sampling and fieldwork experience. Additional favorable qualifications include strong quantitative skills (including coding), experience with collection and analysis of temperature and acoustic data, and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students.
