POSITION SUMMARY:
The Development Director oversees all of Seattle Humane’s day-to-day fundraising activities, with the exception of major and planned gifts. This senior level position includes directing the annual giving program, special events, third party fundraisers, workplace giving, grants and special fundraising drives. S/he reports to and works closely with the Chief Advancement Officer (CAO) in all development and fundraising strategy and endeavors. S/he works closely with the Director of Major Gifts and Planned Giving to ensure both divisions’ programs and objectives are supported and advanced. S/he communicates and works frequently with the Marketing Director and the Chief Financial Officer to ensure constant communication and progress towards both separate and joint objectives. Develops and implements strategic plans and annual budget goals for the division and tracks progress towards monthly, quarterly and annual revenue goals.
KEY OR ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Oversees the day-to-day functions of the development division.
- Develops and implements strategic plans for the division, including both annual and long-term plans.
- Reports out on fundraising progress as requested by leadership.
- Develops the division’s annual revenue and expense budgets; tracks budget progress towards reaching monthly, quarterly and annual targets; and makes data-driven decisions to guide the division’s activities.
- Supervises the Individual Giving Director on the overall performance of the annual giving program including the multi-channel direct response program, growing the donor base by acquiring and retaining donors, donation acknowledgements, and overseeing accuracy of the Raiser’s Edge fundraising database and tracking systems.
- Supervises the Special Events and Corporate Relations Manager on all fundraising and donor stewardship events. Annual fundraising events include Seattle Humane’s gala, Tuxes & Tails, and a peer-to-peer fundraiser such as Mission Impawsible: Over the Edge, among others. Donor stewardship events include major donor appreciation events, PawPrints planned giving dinner, the Calendar Parent party, the Puppy & Kitten Baby Shower, and others as needed or identified.
- Oversees the corporate sponsorship program. Manages relationships with high-level corporate sponsors and sponsorship prospects. Oversees the Special Events and Corporate Relations Manager in all corporate relations activities including stewarding and growing the base of corporate sponsors.
- Directs the Development Coordinator in third party fundraising and workplace giving efforts, grant making efforts for grants of $24,999 or less, and in providing support for signature events and special projects as assigned.
- Directs the corporate and foundation grant program. Manages relationships with program officers, including identification and research, proposal submissions, and reporting for grants of $25,000 or more. Oversees the Development Coordinator in researching, submitting, tracking and reporting on grants of $24,999 or less.
- Ensures constant and collaborative efforts between the development division, marketing division, major and planned gifts division and the finance department. Works closely with the Marketing Director, Director of Major Gifts and Planned Giving and the CFO to coordinate and collaborate activities and efforts.
- Serves as the staff lead for the volunteer fundraising committee, the Donor Development and Outreach Group (DDOG). Works with the DDOG co-chairs to determine priorities and oversees the Development Coordinator in administrative support of DDOG.
- Manages a select donor portfolio of major donors and major donor prospects to raise both unrestricted and restricted gifts through personal asks.
- Oversees creation of publications and materials to support fundraising activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned and supports the Development & Marketing Department objectives.
- Occasionally assists Board Members in their roles as donors and volunteers.
- Fosters a donor-centric and collaborative culture across the Development & Marketing Department and the organization as a whole.
- Demonstrates professional conduct at all times.
- As applicable, directs other special fundraising drives.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises the Individual Giving Director, Special Events and Corporate Relations Manager, Development Coordinator and fundraising volunteers.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree and 5 years fundraising experience with significant responsibility for achieving fundraising goals and proven record of fundraising success are required.
- Record of successful career growth with a minimum of 3 years management responsibility leading a team in year-over-year growth within a substantial non-profit organization(s).
- Demonstrated experience in developing annual giving programs, including mail and digital response programs, donor cultivation and stewardship programs, fundraising event coordination and execution, grant research and proposal writing, and corporate and foundation relationship building.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate staff and other volunteers in a team-oriented setting to carry out fundraising activities and grow dollars received annually.
- Commitment to providing quality service and deep commitment to the mission a must.
- Excellent written, interpersonal and verbal communication skills and ability to manage and prioritize multiple long and short-term projects with positive outcomes.
- Personal knowledge and professional relationships with local, regional and/or national philanthropic fundraising decision makers desired.
- Highly organized “self-starter” who exhibits follow through on tasks and goals.
- Strong attention to detail and desire for accuracy.
- Possess a donor-centric or “donor first” focus and mindset.
- Display a positive attitude and professional demeanor, show concern for people and community, demonstrate presence, self-confidence, common sense and good listening ability.
- Intermediate skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Office required.
- Experience with donor relationship management software required, Raiser’s Edge experience preferred.
- Major donor and/or capital campaign experience preferred.
- CFRE or other advanced fundraising training certification preferred.
- Valid Washington State driver’s license with a good driving record and access to a vehicle required.

- Daily verbal or written communication with staff, volunteers, donors and other constituents through direct contact, meetings, written procedures, email, memos, charts, telephone or mail.
- Frequent contact with Board Members and Seattle Humane executive team members by telephone, email, direct contact and through the mail.
COMPLEXITY
High degree of judgment and discretion required. Requires the ability to work the CAO, with staff members s/he supervises, staff members throughout the department, staff members throughout organization, Board Members, volunteers and donors. Must be able to utilize the software systems to perform donor and data analysis and data mining and track solicitation and stewardship activities. Must be able to manage and complete special projects for the CAO, CEO and the Board of Directors. Must be able to manage staff and volunteers and remain focused on the agency goals and objectives. Must be comfortable interpreting and analyzing budgets, as well as making data-driven decisions. Needs attention to detail and must be able to respond quickly to unexpected questions, comments or requests. Must be able to manipulate information within the donor software and create reports.
Minimum age: 18 years
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to analyze problems and determine the best solutions, communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing. Requires the ability to make decisions under time constraints. Must be able to negotiate, organize and manage multiple and complex projects. Must possess good attention to detail and ability to concentrate and produce accurate work despite frequent interruptions. Needs to be sensitive to other opinions, perspectives or cultures. Must be able to sit for long periods of time; to lift and carry at least 30 pounds; to kneel, crouch, bend and reach. Must possess good hand-eye coordination, agility and stamina. Must possess good senses of hearing, vision, and touch. Must exhibit initiative and motivation in performing all duties.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
General office environment. May have limited animal handling which presents the potential of animal bites, exposure to zoonotic diseases (diseases that can be transmitted from vertebrate animals to people), animal dander and noise.

- Work Hours: Salaried full-time exempt position. 40 hours a week scheduled, five days a week. Some evening and/or weekend hours required.
