The School of Marine Science & Policy (SMSP) is seeking applicants for fellowships for M.S. and Ph.D. programs in Marine Policy with a focus in natural resources and/or environmental economics. These are competitive fellowships and provide a stipend for up to two years with an opportunity for continuation thereafter. Students typically receive funding during their entire time at UD.

QUANTITATIVE APPROACH

The Marine Policy fellowships support students interested in developing and applying quantitative tools for economic assessment concerning the conservation and management of marine resources, including marine fisheries, biodiversity, habitats and ecosystems. Examples of current research include:

  • fisheries management and the impact on fishing communities;
  • fishery policy under climate change and coastal climate adaptation;
  • non-market valuation of coastal and marine resources; and
  • analysis of seafood markets and pricing trends.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

Students who receive a fellowship will design a curriculum around courses in law, decision analysis and marine sciences, with a concentration in economics. Our faculty includes two members
specializing in marine resource economics, as well as others working in environmental and natural resource economics.

Individuals with an interest in economics, data analysis, statistics, applied mathematics and/ or physical sciences are encouraged to apply. Experience working with statistical software such
as Stata, MatLab or R is highly desirable, but not required.

Students from the program typically go on to jobs at federal, state, and local agencies; economic and environmental consulting firms; non-governmental agencies; and in academia.
