Adult and Family Educator- POSITION RE-OPENED

The Adult and Family Educators (AFE) will lead family and adult groups and teach a diverse array of topics that highlight the dynamic ecosystems of a barrier island. Most of the programs they will be assisting or leading are adult programs such as biking, kayaking, photography, birding, and basketry. Their primary responsibilities will include leading the kayaking and biking tours, assisting workshop instructors, leading historical/cultural/eco tours, prepping program materials, engaging participants, and helping ensure the programs run smoothly. Other programs in the Adult and Family department include homeschool programs, Scouts groups, and other special programs. During the summer they will help run and facilitate intergenerational and family programs. They will facilitate all classes, lead night activities (campfire, skits, etc), and support participants. During busy times, the AFE will lead or assist other programs as well such as school programs, outreach, university trips, and summer camp. The AFE will also gain valuable supervisory experience as they help teach and lead our summer staff. This position will start: February 25th, 2019 and run until mid-November 2019.

Requirements:

  • Minimum BA or BS Degree
  • Comfortable working long hours outdoors and on boats with learners of all ages
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification
  • Ability to pass background check in order to obtain NASA security clearance.
  • Valid driver’s license with 2 or fewer moving violations in the past 2 years and no DUI or DWI charges
  • Must be willing and able to obtain a VA Commercial Driver’s License and drive full-size school buses and 15 passenger vans after starting position

Education Director – Full-time, Permanent

The Education Director is charged with the responsibilities associated with the planning, design, development, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of all functional components of Chincoteague Bay Field Station’s (CBFS) education programs. This includes leadership of the educational aspects of the following program areas: College, School, Adult, Family, Road Scholar, Research Activity, Community Outreach, and Volunteers. As the leader and manager of CBFS’s program staff, the Education Director is the person responsible at the operational level for ensuring that the education programs and offerings of CBFS are mission-based.
​ The Education Director reports directly to the Executive Director as a part of the Leadership Team (which includes Finance, Facility & Grounds, and Vessels).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 
Provides leadership and management and oversees hiring for all educational program staff including: School Program Coordinator, University and Research Coordinator, Adult & Family Coordinator, Outreach & Marketing Coordinator, and seasonal education staff.

Oversees planning, development, coordination, and enhancement of all CBFS education programs, which include:

  • School Programs
  • Summer Camps
  • College field trips and courses
  • Road Scholar
  • Adult weekend or week-long workshops (photography, natural history, birding, etc.)
  • Family camps, homeschool programs
  • Community outreach programs & local partnerships
  • Special events and fundraising

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s degree preferred) in education, environmental education, natural sciences, nature interpretation, marine science or closely related field; supplemented by a minimum of five (5) years previous experience and/or training in education, summer youth/adult program operations, or any equivalent combination of education, ideally with some experience in residential education.
  • Excellent natural history and science communication skills.
  • Proven success in curriculum and program development, assessment, and evaluation; experience with inquiry based hand-on science methods.
  • Experience in fundraising/grant-writing as well as budgeting.
  • Minimum of 2 year’s supervisory experience, commitment to team work and demonstrated success in leadership and staff management.
  • Communications and computer experience including word processing, illustrated presentation, spreadsheets and databases.
  • Self-motivated and detail-oriented with the ability to work independently and as a team player on multiple tasks.
  • Ability to Earn & maintain a valid Virginia commercial driver’s license.
  • Advanced First Aid and/or Water Safety training desirable.
  • Enjoy working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Position requires employee to reside on premises of CBFS, with residence and utilities provided by CBFS.

University & Research Intern Supervisor – Full-time, Seasonal

Number of positions available: 1
Position dates: May 6 – August 13, 2019
$1,000 stipend, room and board

Would you like to gain leadership experience in both field and residential settings to facilitate the hands-on educational experience for college students? U&R Assistant duties include leading kayak trips in the tidal creeks and marshes, escorting groups to NASA’s Wallops Island, oversee residential aspects of the college community, and complete other physical and administrative tasks to meet program goals. The U&R Summer Assistant reports to the U&R Coordinator, is a part of the Field Station’s education team, and assists with supervision of U&R Interns in their role as resident advisors, research, and during program work. Download full position description here.
