Summary

This recruitment will be used to fill twelve full-time, seasonal (April – August) Bio Science Research Tech 1 positions for the Institute of Natural Resources Biodiversity Information Center at Oregon State University (OSU). These positions will be located in Eastern Oregon.

The Vegetation Seasonal Field Ecology Crew is a seasonal (4 month) position to obtain primary-source data on sagebrush community vegetation for all shrub steppe habitats in eastern Oregon. The project will entirely involve field research, shrub steppe species identifications, and the use of field sampling software to collect Assessment, Inventory and Monitoring (AIM) information on BLM lands in southeastern Oregon. The work will also include digging soil pits and analyzing soils, as well as gathering accuracy assessment information to assist in the implementation of the Oregon Greater Sage-Grouse action plan. Knowledge of native plants, sagebrush steppe, monitoring methods, field sampling and project management needed.

Position Duties

60% – Collect BLM Assessment, Inventory and Monitoring (AIM) program soils and vegetation data using AIM protocols in the field, and lead one crew in collecting this data.
15% – Work with INR Data Management Staff to assure the AIM data gets needed QA-QC, and is incorporated into needed databases and provided to the BLM.
10% – Drive throughout eastern Oregon, and navigating with maps and GPS to unique or typical habitats or preselected points.
10% – Hike to off-road sites, identifying plants and identifying plant communities.
5% – Collect accuracy assessment and vegetation map training data, initially for riparian and wetland vegetation maps, but eventually for other mapping efforts.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two years of college-level courses in (specific field of biological science); OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Botany or range science plant identification classes or enrollment in a degree program in the biological sciences or a BA/BS degree in biology.
  • Experience or familiarity with PC computers and software. Specifically, knowledge of MS Access or other data base management software is desired, with the ability to learn essential.
  • Knowledge of Oregon flora and geography desired, with the ability to learn essential.
  • Must be able to assist in digging soil pits and in analyzing soils and erosion data.
  • This position requires driving a University vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the University; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle History Check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per OSU Standard 576-056-0000 et seq.
