OPRD is seeking an experienced recreation trail planning and design professional with specific experience developing new trail design plans along with coordinating sustainable trail renovation/reroute/restoration projects with our field staff. The ideal candidate will join our Salem-based team in the execution of design, construction management and planning tasks for trail enhancement and development projects throughout the state.

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department’s mission is to provide and protect outstanding natural, scenic, cultural, historic and recreational sites for the enjoyment and education of present and future generations.

What you will do!
You will work in the Planning + Design section at the OPRD Departments Headquarters, located in downtown Salem, Oregon. This recruitment is for one, full-time, permanent, AEE represented position and will be used to fill future vacancies as they occur.

You will work directly with the Planning + Design Manager, Planning + Design team members and OPRD’s field managers to plan, design and develop recreation trail and trail support facilities that better serve Oregon’s citizens and visitors. You will provide project management and/or technical guidance, design review/input and public outreach leadership or support for park and trail planning efforts for new and existing facilities. You may also be asked to represent OPRD on statewide councils or as an attendee or presenter at conferences, summits or other events with a focus on recreation trail planning and design.

About our Team
The Planning + Design team works collaboratively with our engineering and stewardship sections along with our field managers to visualize recreation improvement design solutions.  Our work is intended to be responsive to public need as established through frequent public engagement efforts that include the Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan, the Oregon Trails Plan and other recreation development guiding documents.  Our recreation planning professionals also develop new park master plans in addition to updating the plans for our iconic parks throughout the state.

Minimum Qualifications

• three (3) years of experience in park, trail and recreation planning and design. At least one year of the experience must be at a technical or professional level performing activities in a natural resource program such as researching and analyzing data, conducting investigations, applying pertinent laws and regulations, or coordinating and monitoring project activities; AND
• a Bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture, planning, recreation management, engineering, or related natural resource field.
• a Master’s degree in related field will substitute for up to one year of the required experience.

• Ability to plan and design recreation trail improvement and development projects on time and to budget.
• Ability to develop content rich info-graphics for distribution to the public and presentation at public meetings.
• Ability to assess trail corridors both existing and future in the field on varied terrain and in varied climatic conditions.
• Experience working with multi-discipline design teams to develop biddable and buildable construction drawings.
• Experience working with field professionals and construction contractors in the implementation of recreation trail and trail side improvement projects.
• Experience developing trail alignments and reroutes in the field that meet current access and sustainability standards.
• Willingness to travel to multiple locations throughout the State of Oregon.
