Many people vacation in Oregon State Parks, but only a select few work there. As a Park Ranger, you’ll be the backbone of park operations. Your dynamic job duties will encompass park maintenance, resource stewardship, customer interactions and more. Forget “Jack-of-all-trades;” as a ranger, you’ll have a mastery of them.

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department’s mission is to provide and protect outstanding natural, scenic, cultural, historic and recreational sites for the enjoyment and education of present and future generations.

What you will do!
You will work at Cape Blanco State Park near Port Orford, Oregon. This recruitment is for one, full-time, permanent, SEIU represented position and will be used to fill future vacancies as they occur.

As a Park Ranger 1, you will perform and oversee a variety of tasks to protect, maintain, operate and repair state park lands, natural and cultural resources, structures, facilities, equipment and systems by using skills in building trades, including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting and landscape maintenance, as well as specialized program skills (e.g.: resource interpretation, cultural and natural resource restoration, utility infrastructure operation, park rule enforcement, etc.).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two years of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping). OR
  • An Associate’s degree in Park and Recreation Administration or Natural Resource Management or Environmental Studies and 6 months of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping). There is no substitute for the 6 months experience.

Desired Attributes

  • Experience developing and delivering interpretive programming.
  • Experience and/or skills working with diverse work team including volunteers, other agencies, or the general public.
  • Experience working with, coordinating and training volunteers.
  • Skills in the safe use of tools, material and equipment associated with landscape, building, facility and utility system maintenance.
  • Skills in performing basic plumbing, carpentry, painting, grounds keeping tasks.
  • Skills in resolving customer complaints related to overnight camping and park rule interpretation.
  • Experience providing exceptional customer service working with the public or in a public setting.
  • Computer knowledge/data entry including fee collection, cash handling, registration of customers and experience with data entry.

Special Requirements

  • Have a criminal history check and driving record check that meets OPRD criteria (Download PDF reader) at the time of hire and throughout employment.
  • Must wear OPRD supplied uniform and comply with appearance code while on duty.
  • Obtain and maintain one or more of the following after appointment:
    • First Aid/CPR Certification
    • OPRD Enforcement Officer Status
    • Pesticide Applicators License
    • Water Treatment and Distribution Certification
    • Wastewater Treatment and Collection Certification
