SELT seeks to hire two full-time Seasonal Land Stewards to assist with the annual monitoring of the organization’s portfolio of nearly 200 conservation easements and management of our 32 Reservations.

The primary task of the Stewards will be to assist in the implementation of the organization’s stewardship program through the completion of annual monitoring visits to conserved lands and basic land management tasks. The successful candidates will receive a thorough understanding of the role conservation easements play in natural resources protection, the importance of a strong stewardship program, best practices for easement monitoring and landowner relationships and best practices for land management. The Seasonal Land Stewards work under the supervision of the Stewardship Director.

Duties & Responsibilities

Communicating and interacting with landowners prior to, during, and after conservation easement monitoring visits

Conducting conservation easement property visits alone, or with landowners or conservation partners

Observing and documenting property conditions through digital photographs, notes, GPS, tablet, and other tools

Evaluating the observed use of the property against allowed uses and restrictions of the conservation easement

Summarizing the monitoring visit through the completion of maps and written monitoring reports

Entering appropriate information into Conservation Connections (Access-based database)

Assist with basic land management tasks including, but not limited to, property inspections, trail maintenance, invasive plant removal, and boundary maintenance

Assisting with other administrative tasks as time allows

Required Qualifications & Skills

Currently enrolled in, or a graduate from, a Bachelor’s degree program in a related field (natural resources, resource management, wildlife, forestry, etc.)

Demonstrated interest in conservation, natural resources, environment, or related fields

Strong written and oral communication skills

Enthusiastic, well-organized, detail-oriented, able to work independently

Physical ability to hike rough terrain, navigate via map and compass, comfortable working alone in the field in all weather conditions

Experience in using ArcGIS 9 or 10 (knowledge of ArcGIS Online a bonus), including creating maps and completing analysis using data layers

Knowledge and ability to understand boundary surveys and conservation easement deeds

Experience with using a tablet for GPS and data collection in the field

Experience in using suite of Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, and Access

Valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and access to a reliable vehicle

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

These positions include extensive fieldwork out of the office in all weather conditions and generally involves walking, bending, crouching, and occasionally climbing. Operates GPS, compass, camera and related tools. A portion of the work is performed in a normal office environment not subject to extremes of noise, temperature, odor, etc. Operates computer, printer, and other office equipment. Work may require extended sitting and repetitive motion in the use of computer, keyboard, and mouse. Regular travel is required.

Start Date & Compensation

These positions are seasonal with a desired work period between May 29 and August 30, 2019. A total of 10 to 12 weeks is expected. Exact dates are flexible depending on the availability of the successful candidates. These are full-time temporary positions. Compensation is $13-17 an hour depending on experience. Mileage will be reimbursed at the standard IRS rate.
