HOURS: Temporary (April 1, 2019 to September 31, 2019); 33 to 40 hours per week
PAY RANGE: $18.50-$21.00 per hour – DOE/DOQ

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Field Biologist will primarily assist field and office activities associated with The Juvenile Steelhead Survival and Emigration study to understand factors influencing steelhead productivity. For field activities, the Field Biologist will conduct a number of fish collection and sampling techniques, including: backpack electrofishing, mobile PIT telemetry, experimental tangle net and smolt trap operation, with measuring fish lengths/weights, taking scale, genetic and otolith samples, and PIT marking individuals. The Field Biologist may also assist with aquatic habitat surveys and with salmon harvest monitoring (harvest monitoring, test fishing). The position requires an individual who has demonstrated working experience with Microsoft software; and can efficiently enter, validate, and summarize data. In addition, the position will support other departmental activities as needed that may include: intertidal invertebrate surveys, flow
monitoring, and the harvest and disbursement of wildlife, shellfish, and salmon for the tribal community.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- B.A. or B.S. degree from an accredited University in Fisheries, Biology, or Environmental Sciences; plus 2 years related work experience in Fisheries.
- Demonstrated experience conducting back pack electrofishing surveys in wade able streams (preferable to have E fishing certification), or PIT telemetry or smolt/screw trap operation.
- Established knowledge of Pacific Northwest Salmon and Steelhead life histories and general ecology.
- Demonstrated ability to identify Salmonid species (parr to adult) to species and identify other common fishes found in Pacific Northwest freshwaters to Family.
- Experience maintaining fisheries equipment (Backpack Electrofisher, PIT antennas or screw trap).
- Willingness to work in the field environments under a variety of weather conditions with a flexible schedule, including the ability to work nights, weekends and holidays.
- Must be able to carry 50lbs. over backcountry terrain up to 6 miles in a day.
- Have work related experience in stream environments, and have demonstrated capacity to travel by foot to cross and/or work in wadable streams.
- Ability to work from a boat in the river.
- Have working knowledge of MS Word, and can enter data into MS Excel, including using some basic functions including graphing.
- Must be able to follow directions have attention to detail and at times work independently in the field.
- Must be able to clearly communicate information verbally and in written form in clear, concise, and professional manner.
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality of information and be willing to sign a confidentiality/non-disclosure agreement.
- Must be respectful and sensitive to the values and culture of the Upper Skagit Indian Tribe.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug test and comply with the Tribe’s Substance Abuse Policy including random drug screening.
- Must pass a background check including a criminal background check.
- Must have a valid Washington State Driver’s License and be insurable under the Tribe’s motor vehicle insurance policy.
