POSITION SUMMARY
The Trout Unlimited Alaska Program seeks an energetic, reliable self-starter with strong outreach and communication skills to build a broad community of southeast Alaskans ready to speak up for trout and salmon habitat conservation. The ideal candidate a strong background in public outreach and grassroots organizing, demonstrated skills in using communication tools and tactics to educate and involve stakeholders, has a love for and knowledge of Southeast Alaska, and an interest in fishing and/or hunting. The right person will work well both independently and as part of a team, including staff, volunteers and partner organizations across the state. S/he will thrive in a rapid-fire environment with hard-working colleagues. We are looking for someone who is innovative, creative, and passionate about Alaska’s wild salmon and trout resources. This person will work closely with the core team of Trout Unlimited staff in Juneau and Anchorage and in close coordination with other organizations sharing our vision. The Southeast Alaska Outreach Coordinator will report directly to the Southeast Alaska Program Director. The position is based in Juneau, Alaska.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Understand and be well versed in all of Trout Unlimited’s major activities and priorities in Southeast Alaska and be able to creatively and effectively work with staff to tell our story to broad audiences in person and through written formats.
- Lead the implementation of grassroots organizing and outreach plans for our Transboundary and Tongass campaigns, collaborating frequently with TU staff and partners and assist with other outreach activities for our southeast Alaska work as necessary. This includes but is not limited to event planning, recruiting spokespeople and volunteers, managing action opportunities, assisting with earned and social media tasks, running booths at events, generating website content.
- Assist the Communications Director, in coordination with campaign staff, with drafting outreach materials, securing earned media, and collaborating on other communications pieces while helping to monitor and adjust tactics to accomplish campaign goals.
- Participate in relevant conference calls and meetings to coordinate TU and partners’ communications and organizing efforts.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree, advanced degree or at least 3-5 years of experience, preferably in the fields of grassroots organizing, public relations or traditional/digital media and communications, volunteer coordination, campaign advocacy or natural resource management.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to reach audiences through a conversational and engaging style, and the ability to translate complex policy and science issues into messages that resonate with supporters, the public, and the media.
- Experience working with and motivating other people, including volunteers. And an understanding of emerging communications and organizing skills including data driven organizing.
- A basic understanding of water, salmon conservation, sport, subsistence and commercial fishing, land use and conservation issues.
- A willingness to travel throughout Southeast Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, occasionally in small aircraft and boats, and to work weekend and evening hours when necessary.
- Highly organized with ability to balance competing deadlines and priorities, as well as working with a wide range of partners. A spirit of collaboration, a sense of humor, and a passion for conserving Alaska trout, salmon and rivers for future generations are musts.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
(The successful candidate will possess many of the following skills and/or the willingness to acquire them):
- Proficiency using Associated Press writing style, Microsoft software, and online project management systems.
- Online engagement skills, including an understanding of social media outreach, blogging, WYSIWYG editing ability and web-writing ability.
- Experience with managing supporter data with systems such as the Voter Activation Network and/or political campaign experience is a plus.
- Photography and videography experience is helpful and ability to edit photos and video, or basic page layout skills is also a plus.

This is not an all-inclusive list of duties and responsibilities. TU offers a competitive benefit and compensation package dependent upon experience. The salary range for this position is $43,000-$53,000 depending on experience. In addition, TU provides excellent health and dental insurance, an employer-matched retirement investment program and paid holiday and vacation leave.
