The Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL) is seeking applicants for a full-time position in the Marine Technical Support Department.  Marine Technical Support (Tech Support) is an in-house resource for faculty, students, and staff that supports research and education through traditional field methods, development of new data collection methods, scientific diving, and vessel operations.  Tech Support also maintains the Alabama Real-time Coastal Observing System (ARCOS), an offshore data collection buoy, and the on-campus wetlab and mesocosm facilities. The department is seeking a versatile candidate whose primary responsibilities will be to manage the wetlab and mesocosm facilities as well as assist vessel operations by captaining trips and maintaining our fleet research vessels (including small engine repair).  Additionally, the candidate will assist current staff with daily operations including (but not limited to): lab instrument repair/maintenance, and field and dive operations. The successful candidate will have experience with small vessel operation and captaining, small engine repair, and basic computer operation/programming. A bachelor’s degree is preferred, but relevant experience can be used in place of a college degree.

Job Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid Driver’s license
  • Valid vessel license and experience trailering and operating small vessels
  • Background in basic mechanical and electrical principles
  • Basic understanding of flow through and recirculating marine systems
  • Open water SCUBA certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months)
  • Computer/software competency (MS Office, Google products, networking/internet protocols)
  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Able to carry 50 lbs unaided 100 yards.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently

Job Skills:

  • OUPV/Six-Pack Captain License
  • Bachelors in Marine Science or a related field
  • Small engine repair experience/certification
  • AAUS Scientific Diving Authorization (or ability to obtain within a year).
  • Familiarity with marine sampling equipment/instrumentation
  • Interest in Marine Sciences, Oceanography, or related disciplines
  • Programming experience (MATLAB, Python, Arduino, etc.)
