(Full-time, Non-Permanent)
In the office or in the field, the incumbent has two primary duties: the first is to assist the Wildlife Area Manager and other staff perform a variety of technical duties related to land management and development. This position will support land management activities on the Columbia Basin Wildlife Area. Under the supervision of the Senior Biologist (Wildlife Area Manager) this position will carry out a variety of technical habitat and land management tasks supporting sound stewardship of agency lands.
Duties
Vegetation Management:
- Weed control activities on the Columbia Basin Wildlife area. This includes, chemical, cultural, and mechanical means using a variety of vehicles and equipment. This includes backpack sprayers, atv mounted sprays, and truck/tractor mounted sprays.
Habitat Maintenance:
- This position supports habitat management activities on the Columbia Basin Wildlife area. This will include wetland management work. Activities include water control structure operation and maintenance, habitat manipulation through mechanical means, planting, seeding, and moist soil management activities in managed wetlands. It will also include upland restoration work to include planting of grass plugs, and seeding native grasses through a variety of means.
Fence Construction and Maintenance:
- Construct new fence/replace old damaged fence/maintain current fence on the wildlife area units. This will require the use of a gps to locate boundaries. Building barbed and woven wire fences to include t posts, wire, h braces, corner posts, and other associated structures.
Sign Posting/Maintenance:
- Post new signs to comply with current regulations, maintain signage on kiosks and wildlife area unit boundaries. Maintain current fence on the wildlife area units.
Administration:
- Weekly reports, time sheets, spray records and associated paperwork.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Valid Washington state drivers license.
Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
- Basic habitat management experience or understanding.
- Pesticide Applicators license.
- Plant/Weed Identification.
- Working knowledge of vegetation management techniques and strategies.
- Critical thinking and the ability to make decisions based on the best available information.
- Experience with a wide variety of hand and power tools(chainsaws, drills, hammer, etc.)
- Experience operating wheeled tractors and skid steers and associated implements.
Supplemental Information
Working Conditions:
- This position is largely a field based position and works in remote settings often times alone.
- Ability to work in inclement weather over difficult terrain, including slippery rocks, steep banks, and sticky mud.
- Ability to walk, bend, stoop, often on uneven terrain, while at times carrying up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to load and transport equipment and gear.
- Ability to safely operate motor vehicles in field situations.
- This is a full time 40 hours per week position normally scheduled M-F 8-5 some irregular hours will be necessary seasonal to accomplish tasks.
- May have travel requirements (less than 10%)
- The use of a wide variety of hand and power tolls as well as operate and maintain equipment including pickup trucks, tractors and implements, track loader, sprayers and atv’s in field situations.
- This position frequently interacts with the public on the wildlife area. Strong communication skills are a necessity.

This position is in the bargaining unit represented by the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals and is subject to the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals.
