The Ponisio, McFrederick, and Woodard at UC Riverside (http://www.ponisiolab.com/) invite applications for up to two field technician positions to collect data on wild bees and the plants they pollinate in sunflower farms located in Yolo County, California. The goal of this project is to examine how foraging trait diversity in wild bees influence their vulnerability to pesticide exposure and shapes their associations with parasites and microbes. Data collection involves
standardized sampling of wild bee communities using insect nets and collecting data about plant and weed communities on sunflower farms.

These are each 12 week positions from June 1st – August 31st, 2019, with exact start and end dates to be determined. Technicians will work as part of a team to rotate around sampling sites.  Techs will be based in the Davis/Winters area.

Pay is $3,176.00/monthly. Following the summer field season, technicians may be invited to join us as laboratory technicians at UCR to process samples, conditional on performance and available funding.

Responsibilities:

Field monitoring and collecting pollinators

Processing insect specimens by pinning, labeling

Entering data into spreadsheets

Periodic monitoring of trap nest sureys or other misc. pollination experiments

Required Qualifications:

Attention to detail,legible handwriting required

Interest in botany, entomology, field ecology, conservation ecology

Previous lab or course experience related to one of the topics above

Highly motivated, able to work independently

Computer skills with Word/Excel

Willingness to share housing for the summer with other field crew members
Valid Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications:
Field research experience with pollinators or in agriculture

Experience with insect collection,
Bachelor’s Degree and/or masters degree in related field
