Position Description

The City of Tacoma is seeking an outgoing, highly motivated person devoted to public service to join our team as a temporary intern for the Healthy Homes, Healthy Neighborhoods program.  This is a great opportunity to join the City of Tacoma, acquire valuable work experience, and personally contribute to positive change in our community

The intern selected for this position will be responsible for engaging in the following types of job duties:

  • Conduct intensive community engagement in the South Tacoma neighborhood.
  • Develop appropriate educational materials.
  • Implement outreach primarily through door-to-door contact with Tacoma residents as well as presentations to community groups and event implementation.
  • Inform community members about a range of sustainability topics, possibly including energy and water conservation, recycling, sustainable transportation, air quality, tree canopy, urban gardening, and more. Coordinate local sustainability initiatives by building a network with regional organizations.

The intern will make positive contributions to the livability of South Tacoma by empowering community participation in sustainability initiatives.

Educational Benefits:
Students will develop public speaking, program management, event implementation, environmental engagement, and other analytical skills as well as a knowledge of public environmental sustainability strategies. Students should consult with their academic program regarding receiving academic credit for the internship.

Hours and Terms of the Position: 500 hours 
The hours for this position are 16-20 hours per week, for a period of approximately 6 months, starting in the Spring of 2019. This position will require the intern to be available on a regular schedule that will include evenings and most weekends, with the understanding that the remainder of the time will be flexible based on the student’s schedule.

Location and Physical Requirements of Position: 
This position requires being able to work both outdoors and in an office environment, to include computers and phones. Must be able to lift at least 20 pounds.

Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.

Must be enrolled in vocational school, community college, four-year college or university, graduate student, or a recent graduate who has completed a degree from an accredited college/university within the last year.

Valid driver license required at time of appointment.

  • Experience with meeting facilitation and event coordination.

  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement programs and to write clear, complete, and logical reports and proposals.
  • Ability to learn pertinent Federal, State, and local laws and ordinances.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, partner organizations and members of the community.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, using language that is appropriate to the complexity of the topic and the audience.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate and work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Knowledge of the Tacoma area and community is preferred.
