Internship Position: Peer Advisor L.E.A.D. Program

 

Our Mission

LEAD provides experiential service learning opportunities for students to apply environmental knowledge outside the classroom. Our organization fosters partnerships within the WWU community and Whatcom community at large. These partnerships between community members, public lands, and WWU aim to restore and preserve native biodiversity in Whatcom county.

 

Internship Description

This position supports various administrative and specialized functions within Huxley College’s Learning, Environment, Action, and Discovery (L.E.A.D.) office and field work experiences. Students are expected to work 30-hours per credit.

Under general supervision of the L.E.A.D. Director(s), duties of this position may include:

  • Managing various restoration work parties, seminars or projects.
  • Promoting awareness of local environmental issues and benefits of service-learning for both students and community
  • Making direct contact with students and community members via email and social media
  • Using Microsoft Office suite and Google docs for data entry and communication
  • Maintaining records, files, and assisting with written reports

 

Educational Benefits

Gain and develop transferable environmental education, planning and office skills including: working as part of a team (often outdoors), communicating effectively with a variety of people, managing time and workload and computer applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Google docs.

Student interns will learn:

  • To recruit and manage volunteers
  • To support or run work parties
  • To identify local native and invasive species
  • To promote a non-profit organization through campus news outlets, social media, and community outreach

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite
  • Knowledge of Google docs and Google drive
  • Dependable with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Detail oriented with the ability to prioritize tasks
  • Appropriate outdoor clothing and comfort being outside for 2 hours rain or shine
  • Ability to attend work parties off-campus around the county (bus service is not available to all work parties)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous student leadership experience
  • Leadership education or training
  • Experience with Social media and publicity
  • Event planning experience
  • Project management skills or experience
  • Knowledge of local plants and animals
  • Interest in protecting and restoring the environment
