Position Summary

The Estuary Education Assistant will carry out Padilla Bay NERR’s environmental education mission by teaching classes and workshops, leading and participating in educational field trips for youth and adults, and providing educational outreach activities at community events, program partners to develop materials and programs, and to support a positive visitor experience in the Breazeale Interpretive Center. 

 

Job Duties might include

  • Work with Padilla Bay education staff to teach youth programs about estuaries
  • Interact with the public in our exhibits and aquarium
  • Help maintain educational materials and exhibits.
  • Care for animals and maintain equipment in our public aquarium
  • Provide occasional support to researchers in a laboratory, on a research boat and in mud flats, salt marshes, beaches and other estuary habitats in and near Padilla Bay
  • Represent Padilla Bay NERR at community events
  • Special projects depending on skills and interests of intern

 

Training

In addition to on-the-job training required for regular job assignments, this intern will also have access to classes and seminars on various scientific and natural history subjects that are offered by Padilla Bay Reserve.

 

Skills

  • A desire to teach and learn
  • Enthusiasm for nature, working in the outdoors and working with youth.
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills
  • The ability to communicate and interact in a positive, professional manner with diverse populations, including project partners, staff, volunteers, youth and the general public.
  • The ability to work outdoors in any weather on sand and cobble beaches and especially in mud flats is essential.
