Position Description:

The Environment, Land, and Licensing business unit is responsible for assuring that City Light complies with all appropriate Federal and State laws, local statutes, and City ordinances, as well as fulfilling its environmental responsibilities under the City Light Strategic Plan.

The Environmental Intern will work within the Science Policy unit, supporting these functions as required of the utility by the referenced laws, ordinances, and the strategic plan.

Job Responsibilities:

During this internship, the intern will be specifically responsible for:
·        1. Assisting in South Fork Tolt River Research, Monitoring and Compliance Program, including:
·          a. Assisting in the production of the monthly flow compliance graphs and semi-annual flow compliance reports which include compiling and preparing various hydraulic data, producing tables and graphs, summarizing and assessing flow compliance with FERC or HCP requirements.
·          b. Assisting in field studies such as the summer steelhead PIT tag study, which will require work in the field in difficult terrain in all types of weather. Tasks may include data acquisition and summarization, applying statistical analysis. producing tables and graphs, cataloguing photos, using GIS and GPS and producing summaries for a report.
·          c. Collecting and analyzing water temperature data in the Tolt River watershed.
·          d. Supporting City Light’s fish monitoring programs on the South Fork Tolt River, including data summarization and report writing.
·          e. Implementing various data management tasks using MS Access and MS Excel
·        2. Assisting the Climate Adaptation Advisor in research, analyses, literature reviews, study designs, and white papers designed to advance the climate resilience of City Light, including:
·          a. Conducting a literature review and developing a study design for a paleo-reconstructed streamflow using dendrochronology for a hydroelectric project.
·          b. Performing a literature review and writing a white paper on the state-of-the-knowledge on flooding from rapid snowmelt as projected by climate change research.
·          c. Assessing climate change risks & opportunities to participating in the Energy Imbalance Market (EIM) leading to a white paper.
·          d. Conducting a literature review of climate change attribution to write a state-of-knowledge on attribution of extreme events on climate change (e.g., floods, heatwaves, wind, drought, fire).
3. Miscellaneou GIS-related studies/work.

This internship will benefit the student through the following learning outcomes:

•        Experience applying their specific field of study to address real world projects that benefit the utility;
•        Exposure to how scientists apply their skills to address real world challenges and concerns of an electric utility;
•        Experience working with scientists from various fields of study that can help the student hone in on the specifics of where they want to focus their careers and/or graduate studies.

This internship will benefit the student through the following learning outcomes:

  • Gain experience working with land management and habitat restoration issues in urban and remote areas of Washington
  • Gain experience implementing community-based stewardship projects
  • Expand data collection and analysis skills
  • Gain knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental regulations and permitting processes
  • Learn best management practices for protection of fish and wildlife habitats

Qualifications:

Education:  This position is open to undergraduate and graduate students actively working towards a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an environmental science. Specific discipline or area of emphasis may vary and include biological, ecological, chemical, and/or physical sciences.

Undergraduate students must possess at least a 2.0 GPA at the time of application and throughout the internship. Graduate students must possess and maintain a 3.0 GPA. The student must be enrolled in accredited college courses, with a part-time or full-time course load, leading to a degree or certificate relevant to the internship.

License:  A current Washington State driver’s license and safe driving record is required for operating City and City Light motor pool vehicles.

Desired Qualifications:  Ideally, the successful candidate will possess strong problem-solving skills; experience working with Excel and Access; the ability to gather data, summarize, and analyze both quantitative and qualitative data; and experience  reviewing scientific literature and summarizing scientific articles.  Strong written and oral communication skills.  Experience and comfort working outside in inclement weather…

Additional Information:

Internship Duration and Hours: 
The timeframe of the internship will be May / June 2019 to June 2020. The candidate must be available to work 40 hours/week during the summer and up to 20 hours/week when classes are in session. Work hours will be flexible to accommodate the intern’s academic schedule.
