The Environmental Management and Compliance Unit is responsible for implementation of compliance programs such as hazardous waste management and emergency response to avoid violations and potential harm to workers and the environment; and hazardous waste remediation for sites with current or historical contamination and tracking and management of SCL’s environmental (financial) liability.

The intern in this role will be responsible for assisting with activities associated with investigation and cleanup of remediation sites, including: planning, costing and coordinating environmental consultant and contractor work activities, coordination and preparation of site cleanup permits, coordinating site activities, oversight during site activities and reviewing and interpreting environmental data and reports.

Job Responsibilities:

During this internship, the intern will be specifically responsible for:

  • Assisting with review and interpretation of environmental (soil, ground water, air chemistry) data
  • Assisting with planning environmental site cleanup
  • Assisting with preparation and acquisition of permits for site work
  • Assisting with coordination with environmental consultant and cleanup contractors
  • Assisting with oversight of consultants and contractors on site during work activities
  • Assisting with review of consultant reports

This internship will benefit the student through the following learning outcomes:

  • Learning and understanding the variety of aspects related to environmental data acquisition and interpretation, cleanup planning, and cleanup construction.
  • The intern will be able to directly apply and expand their technical experience with the elements listed above in either consulting or the utility sector.
  • Technical writing skills will be beneficial in any career path
  • The intern may require HAZWOP training for on-site work, in which case the intern would gain this training that could be a useful qualification for subsequent employment in the environmental field

Qualifications:

Education:  This position is open to senior undergraduate students and graduate students (as of the start of the internship) studying Environmental or Earth Sciences, Engineering, or related fields.

Undergraduate students must possess at least a 2.0 GPA at the time of application and throughout the internship. Graduate students must possess and maintain a 3.0 GPA. The student must be enrolled in accredited college courses, with a part-time or full-time course load, leading to a degree or certificate relevant to the internship.

Desired Qualifications: Proficiency with productivity software (MS Word, Excel, Project), familiarity with environmental chemistry data (preferably soil and ground water), general geology and hydrogeology coursework or experience, and technical writing skills.

Additional Information:

Internship Duration and Hours: 
The timeframe of the internship will be May / June 2019 to June 2020. The candidate must be available to work up to 20 hours/week when classes are in session and will have flexibility to work up to 40 hours during academic breaks. Work hours will be flexible to accommodate the intern’s academic schedule.
