The Carkeek Park Environmental Learning Center is recruiting for enthusiastic and engaging Environmental Educators to join the EarthKeepers Nature Day Camp team. Carkeek Park offers extraordinary opportunities for nature adventures with 220 acres including forests, meadows, wetlands, creeks, and beach access.

The popular EarthKeeper nature day camp, includes weekly themes such as Nature Detective, Furs, Tails, Tracks and Trails, Tidepools- Window to Puget Sound, Survivor’s Island, Buggin’ Out, and Carkeek’s Incredible Time Machine.

Summer Day Camp Schedule:

  • July 1, 2019 – August 27, 2019 (no camp on July 4th).
  • Monday – Friday, 30-40 hours per week.
  • Shifts will be 7 to 8 hours per day between 8:00am – 5:00 pm (subject to change based on business need).
  • A one day mandatory pre-camp orientation will be scheduled in mid-June.
  • Nature Camp Training is framed between June 21-28, 2019

Rate: $17.00 per hour to start

Basic Duties: 

  • Guide children ages 6-12 in hands-on, environmental education activities.
  • Work closely with the Education Director and EarthKeeper team to plan and implement programs and activities.
  • Guide 8-10 children, ages 6-12, independently while exploring Carkeek Park.
  • Teach with other staff members and direct games and activities (including songs and art projects) for 20-30 campers.
  • Serve as a positive role model for campers and use positive behavior guidance strategies.
  • Maintain a safe, friendly and fun learning environment.
  • Work outdoors and keep high energy and engagement while exploring Carkeek Park for long periods of time.
  • Be flexible, adaptive and willing to provide ongoing constructive feedback to improve program.

Requirements: 

  • At least 1 year experience working with children, preferably in an outdoor setting;
  • One year of college level education, preferably with course work in the natural sciences and/or education;
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with team members of diverse backgrounds;
  • Valid WA driver’s license and First Aid/CPR certification or ability to obtain;
  • Commitment to work full summer program;
  • Maintain positive attitude as a team player;
  • If hired, must pass criminal background check;
  • If hired, must provide proof of eligibility to work in the US and valid government issued ID;
  • If hired, must sign up for direct deposit with either checking or savings account.

Desired Skills/Abilities: 

  • Experience working with a diversity of youth;
  • Knowledge of Pacific Northwest plants, animals, and ecosystems;
  • Knowledge of child development and teaching methods;
  • Ability to develop creative lesson plans;
  • Experience in visual and creative arts;
  • Enthusiasm and energy.

This is a summer only, non-benefited position.
