The Discovery Park Environmental Learning Center is recruiting for an enthusiastic and engaging Summer Nature Day Camp Environmental Educator to join their team this summer.

For over forty years, Discovery Park has offered a nature day camp program to the children of the Puget Sound region. Discovery Park is a 560-acre natural area park operated by Seattle Parks and Recreation. It is the largest city park in Seattle,and occupies most of the former Fort Lawton site. Situated on Magnolia Bluff overlooking Puget Sound, Discovery Park offers spectacular view of both the Cascade and the Olympic Mountain ranges. The park includes two miles of protected tidal beaches as well as open meadow lands, sea cliffs, forest groves, active sand dunes, thickets, streams, and ponds. We visit the different areas of the park in order to encourage discovery of the outside world and our place within it. Environmental Educators work individually and as a team.

Summer Day Camp Schedule:

  • June 3 – August 23, 2019
  • Monday – Friday, 25-40 hours per week depending on the camp
  • Available shifts will be 6 to 8 hours per day, starting between 8:00-9:00am (subject to change)
  • Mandatory pre-camp training and orientation will be offered in June

Rate: $17.00 per hour

Basic Duties:

  • Guiding children ages 4-12, in hands-on, environmental education activities
  • Working closely with the Environmental Education team to plan and implement programs and activities
  • Create curriculum for one day of elementary camp
  • Occasionally monitoring the Before or After camp program
  • Guide 8 – 10 children, ages 4-12, by yourself as they explore all areas of the park
  • Direct games and activities (including songs and art projects) for 8 – 60 campers
  • Maintain a safe, friendly and fun learning environment
  • Regularly team-teach with 6 other staff members and 48–60 campers
  • Supervise, evaluate, and act as a positive role model for the Jr. Naturalist volunteers, ages 13-16
  • Ability to work, enjoy self, and campers, and keep high energy while exploring Discovery Park for extended periods of time
  • Be flexible, flexible, flexible

Requirements:

  • At least 1-year experience working with children, preferably in an outdoor setting
  • One year of college level education, preferably with course work in the natural sciences and/or education
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Valid WA driver’s license and First Aid/CPR certification, or ability to get prior to starting
  • Commitment to work full summer season
  • Smiling, responsible team player
  • Must pass criminal background check
  • Must provide proof of eligibility to work in the US and valid government issued ID
  • Must sign up for direct deposit with either checking or savings account

Desired Skills/Abilities:

  • Experience working with a diversity of youth
  • Ability to develop creative lesson plans
  • Experience in visual and creative arts
  • Knowledge of Pacific Northwest plants and animals
  • Enthusiasm and energy!
