Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) Community Partnerships Team is seeking an undergraduate or graduate level intern who’ll work with the Community Partnerships Team and Community Clean-Up Program manager to provide timely assistance to Seattle residents involved in maintaining clean and safe neighborhoods.There is currently one (1) internship available to undergraduate or graduate students projected to start mid-May 2019 . This internship is for up to 18 months or graduation, whichever comes first. We require a 1-year commitment for this internship.

Learning objectives for this internship include:

  • Gain practical experience in chosen career field;
  • An opportunity to apply skills and knowledge learned in the classroom to actual on-the-job experiences;
  • Learn to work in teams and adapt in a professional work environment;
  • Discover employment options within an academic discipline;
  • Learn project management and volunteer coordination skills;
  • Gain experience assisting with development of volunteer recruitment and retention strategies.
 Job Responsibilities:
Under direct supervision, the intern will learn through supervised practical training various aspects of program management, volunteer assistance, project development, asset management, public administration, and community development.

Specific duties include:

  • Assist residents in cleaning and maintaining neighborhoods, and support associated activities
  • Report on completed tasks
  • Develop promotional plans and materials
  • Attend community meetings, represent program objectives to the public and staff, work on Inclusive Outreach and Public Engagement Assessment and Evaluation in under-represented communities;
  • Conduct demographic surveys;
  • Provide information to city residents on city programs;
  • Maintain databases;
  • Identify new strategies for achieving program goals.

This intern will be working primarily with the Adopt-A-Street, Adopt-A-Block, Spring Clean, and Waste Free Communities Matching Grant Programs.

 Qualifications:
Education: Applicants must be currently enrolled in graduate-level coursework pursuing a degree in Environmental Studies, Communications, Public Administration, or closely related field.

Applicants must be enrolled either part-time or full-time for the duration of the internship. Exception:Students do not need to be enrolled over the summer months but will need to provide at the end of Spring Quarter proof of continuing and pre-registration for the Autumn session as applicable. Graduate students must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA..

Licensing Requirements:  A Washington State driver’s license is required for this internship.

 Additional Information:
Hours: During school sessions, work hours will be scheduled to complement class schedules (15-18 hours per week). This internship may permit up to 40 hours per week during breaks and summer months. Work is normally performed between the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
