Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) Drainage & Wastewater (DWW) Systems Management, Environmental Science & Technology, Urban Ecosystems Division is seeking an undergraduate or graduate level intern to gain experience in the implementation of project performance monitoring to meet regulatory (permits), contractual (grants), and facility management obligations for the Drainage and Wastewater Line of Business (DWW LOB), particularly in work related to surface and storm water management.  The position will also provide urban watershed data collection and analysis to support planning staff working on the Drainage Integrated Plan.

Learning objectives include but are not limited to:

  • Hands-on experience doing a range of scientific and technical activities in urban watersheds for a major municipal drainage utility
  • Experience performing some or several of the following technical activities:developing study designs, conduct literature searches, setting up, testing & calibrating field equipment, collecting field data (such as, fish & habitat surveys), entering, managing & analyzing data, and summarizing results into documents (executive summaries, reports, papers and presentations)
  • Experience preparing grant applications for projects and for performance monitoring
  • Experience preparing urban watershed technical information materials to support drainage utility planning, including GIS maps, white papers, executive summaries
  • Experience providing one-on-one end user support with a diverse workforce
  • Exposure to many different business areas in a major municipal utility
  • Exposure to public and external agency interactions as a representative of a drainage utility.

There is currently one undergraduate or graduate internship available, and is projected to start mid-May 2019. This internship is for the summer.

 Job Responsibilities:
  • Assist Seattle DWW staff and/or research partners install, test, calibrate and maintain field equipment, perform physical and biological surveys, collect data and/or deliver samples
  • Work with Seattle DWW staff and/or research partners to resolve technical issues, and improve study design and/or data collection methods.  Apply standard and/or SPU survey and data collection protocols to collect and handle data
  • Prepare documents and/or presentations on urban watershed technical information for internal and external communications including natural resource planning, capital project planning, development, permitting & implementation, and project performance monitoring.  Includes time for reviewing & commenting on technical documents, attending project meetings.
 Qualifications:
Education: Applicants must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in natural sciences, environmental engineering, and/or urban planning and design, such as, Aquatic Ecology, Geotechnical Sciences, Hydrology, Fisheries Biology, Wildlife Biology, Forestry, Wetlands Science, Environmental Engineering & Sciences, or other closely related field.

Students must be currently enrolled on a part-time or full-time basis for the duration of the internship.  Exception: Students are not required to be enrolled during the summer sessions, but must provide documentation of continued Fall enrollment at the end of Spring quarter. Undergraduate student must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA; graduate student must maintain a 3.0 GPA.

 Additional Information:
Hours: During school sessions, work hours will be scheduled to complement class schedules (18-20 hours per week). The internship opportunity may permit up to 40 hours per week during breaks and summer months. Work is normally between the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday – Friday.
