Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) has one (1) Land Survey internship opportunity.  The successful candidate will assist with providing support for capital improvement projects for SPU, Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT), and consultants.  The intern will gain valuable insight into the Land Survey profession, an understanding of how Land Surveying is critical to project design, and experience in a diverse work environment while working with budgets, scopes and timelines.

Learning objectives for this internship include:

  • Process and draft survey data using Autodesk Civil 3D from survey field data
  • Research records for underground utilities, survey control and as-built data
  • Complete timecard, tracking sheets, research plan forms and equipment log
  • Gain insight and practical experience in the Land Survey profession
  • Be exposed to a variety of civil engineering projects
  • Gain training and experience in a variety of supporting software required to perform assigned tasks.

This internship projected start date is late-May 2019, with a duration of up to 24 months, or graduation, whichever comes first.

 Job Responsibilities:
Under close supervision, the intern will perform the following functions:

  • Proper care, calibration, storage and upkeep of survey equipment
  • Measure data for survey control, site features and digital terrain models
  • Record measurements in data collector and field books
  • Access and measure underground utilities
  • Organize and store survey data for processing
  • Process and draft survey data
  • Produce topographic, base, control plan, exhibit, and presentation maps
  • Calculate easements, right-of-way, property boundary and construction layout from plan sets
  • Research records for underground utilities, survey control, and as-built data.
 Qualifications:
Education:  Applicants must be an undergraduate-level student pursuing a degree and/or certificate in Land Survey, Geomatics, or closely related field.
Student must be enrolled on either a part-time or full-time basis for the duration of the internship. Undergraduate student must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA.  Student does not need to be enrolled during summer session; however, s/he must provide documentation of Fall enrollment at the end of Spring quarter.

Physical requirements:

Must be able to sit for long periods of time, work in field environment, and lift up to 40 pounds.

 Additional Information:
Hours: For the summer months, work hours are between 7:00 AM and 4:00 PM, Monday – Friday.

If this internship is extended into the school year, work hours (15-20 hours) will be scheduled to complement class schedules.
