The Environment, Land, and Licensing Business Unit is responsible for assuring that City Light complies with al appropriate environmental laws, local statutes, and City ordinances as well as fulfilling its responsibilities under the utility’s Strategic Plan. The Environmental Intern will help support these functions and will report to the Natural Resources and Permitting Manager.

The Natural Resources and Permitting Unit, a group within the Environment, Land, and Licensing Business Unit, is responsible for (1) overseeing implementation of natural and cultural resources mitigation and protection measures for the Skagit and Boundary hydroelectric projects; (2) complying with environmental permitting requirements for capital improvement and maintenance projects for City Light’s electrical generation facilities and transmission/distribution system; (3) managing City Light’s Green House Gas Program; and (4) coordinating the Avian Protection Program. Staff in this Unit are primarily scientists, environmental planners. Their work includes managing fish and wildlife habitat lands; coordinating flows to protect fisheries resources; overseeing several recreational programs; preserving historic properties; collecting and analyzing data; and preparing permits, scientific reports, and environmental documents.

Seattle City Light is proud to be the nation’s first carbon neutral electric utility and has been delivering carbon neutral electric power to its customers since 2005.

 Job Responsibilities:
The intern in this role will be responsible for supporting Seattle City Light’s Greenhouse Gas Neutrality Program, avian protection, and other environmental database projects.  This intern may perform other duties as assigned.

During this internship, the intern will be specifically responsible for:

  • Assisting with GHG program database and greenhouse gas inventory and offset data management project;
  • Assisting with avian protection database
  • Assisting with data compilation, synthesis, analysis and QA/AC;
  • Assisting with database development and
  • Identifying, processing, researching, and summarizing more qualitative information in a concise and factual manner.
  • Conducting primary research on a variety of GHG, natural, and cultural resource topics

This internship will benefit the student through the following learning outcomes:

  • Experience applying their specific field of study to address real world projects that benefit the utility;
  • Exposure to how scientists apply their skills to address the challenges and concerns of an electric utility;
  • An understanding of environmental laws and regulations;
  • Exposure to a variety of scientific disciplines; and
  • Experience working with scientists from various fields of study that can help the student hone in on the specifics of where they want to focus their careers and/or graduate studies

 

 Qualifications:
Education:  This position is open to junior and senior undergraduate students and graduate students (as of the start of the internship) studying environmental science, quantitative ecology, atmospheric science, natural resources management, chemistry, or related field.

Undergraduate students must possess at least a 2.0 GPA at the time of application and throughout the internship. Graduate students must possess and maintain a 3.0 GPA. The student must be enrolled in accredited college courses, with a part-time or full-time course load, leading to a degree or certificate relevant to the internship.

Desired Qualifications: Ideally, the candidate will possess an understanding of greenhouse gas and climate change principles, intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and Access, research, and database development and management.

Internship Duration and Hours: 
The timeframe of the internship will be May/June 2019 to June 2020,  The candidate must be available to work up to 20 hours/week when classes are in session and will have flexibility to work up to 40 hours during academic breaks. Work hours will be flexible to accommodate the intern’s academic schedule.How to Apply:
