Position Title: Restoration & Education Internship

Location: Renton, WA

This is a 6-month, stipend internship. The Education & Restoration Intern will be responsible for leading Education and Restoration Programs at SHADOW Lake Nature Preserve. This includes working outside in all weather, leading groups of SHADOW volunteers in the field, guiding outdoor education programs, and assisting with marketing and outreach for a small nonprofit.

The ideal candidate is driven and self-sufficient, with high emotional intelligence and a passion for environmental conservation.

Salary, Benefits, Schedule

  • 16 hours/week, April – September
  • $5,000 stipend
  • SHADOW’s Office is open Tuesday – Saturday. Some additional weekend and evening hours will be required with ample notice.
  • Work in a calm, natural, peaceful setting at a 109-acre Nature Preserve.
  • Valid WA State Driver’s License and reliable transportation with current insurance are required. Position involves some local travel. Reimbursement is available for work related travel and parking expenses.

Location: SHADOW Lake Nature Preserve office is located at 21656 184th Ave SE, Renton, WA 98058.

Duties & responsibilities

  • Facilitate Saturday Restoration Work Parties in all weather conditions – working on the grounds with volunteers includes leading safety trainings, plant identification, and tool usage.
  • Facilitate all elements of educational events and fieldtrips, working with students of all ages including – preparation, execution, and clean up.
  • Promote events on Facebook and in local newspapers, maintain the Nature Preserve’s social media accounts, and create content for the monthly newsletter.
  • Expand SHADOW’s contacts by engaging with diverse community groups.
  • Maintain Salesforce database, capturing information from volunteers and program participants.
  • Schedule and ensure staffing for SHADOW’s summer outreach and tabling events.

Qualifications

  • At least one year of professional experience, preferably within restoration or education.
  • College-level coursework &/or experience in environmental science &/or land conservation highly desired.
  • Passion for the environment and fostering human connections with the natural world.
  • Positive attitude and the ability to carry yourself in a professional manor.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Ability to follow directions.
  • Familiarity with technological platforms such as Microsoft Office Suite, Salesforce, and WordPress highly desired.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with common social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter.
  • Reliable transportation.
