Freestone Environmental Services, Inc. (www.gofreestone.com) a multi-disciplinary consulting firm, seeks an Environmental Scientist to support cleanup and restoration of contaminated sites in the Great Lakes Region. This individual will work with NOAA’s Office of Response and Restoration (OR&R, http://response.restoration.noaa.gov/), Assessment and Restoration Division (ARD) under the Damage Assessment, Remediation, and Restoration Program (DARRP-www.DARRP.noaa.gov/) and support restoration efforts as part of NOAA’s Great Lakes Habitat Restoration Program. This position will be based out of either NOAA’s Seattle, WA or Ann Arbor, MI office.
OR&R’s mission is to protect and restore coastal and marine resources injured by the release of oil or hazardous substances or direct physical impacts such as vessel groundings. Additionally, OR&R has been involved in the interagency Great Lakes Restoration Initiative since fiscal year 2010. Responsibilities of the incumbent generally will include providing support for NOAA’s Great Lakes Restoration Initiative efforts. Specific responsibilities include those listed below.
Core Responsibilities:
● Employee shall provide recommendations for integrating restoration and recovery into cleanup plans for hazardous waste sites including Torch Lake Area of Concern (AOC) (MI).
● Employee shall evaluate Great Lakes Restoration Initiative AOCs to support restoration.
● Employee shall recommend and participate in monitoring projects to ensure cleanup or restoration objectives are met.
● Employee shall support NOAA’s efforts under the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, such as developing project templates (proposals); managing activities of principal investigators; budgeting and prioritizing expenditures; resolving billing and spending concerns; and coordinating with other GLRI activities.
● Employee shall coordinate and connect OR&R Assessment and Restoration Division’s activities occurring in the Great Lakes such as DIVER development, AOC data management and DARRP case work with other regional NOAA activities.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
● Master’s or Doctorate degree in environmental science, preferably in one of more of the following sub-disciplines: aquatic toxicology, environmental chemistry, coastal ecology, environmental engineering; or environmental policy with an emphasis in quantitative analysis.
● Strong verbal and writing skills.
● Strong computer and analytical skills
● Self-motivated, energetic, strategic thinker.
● Ability to work independently.
Desired Qualifications:
● Familiarity with the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.
● Experience in managing complex environmental projects, including building consensus around goals and objectives, and tracking and reporting on accomplishments.
● Experience in assessing risk or injury to contaminated Great Lakes coastal aquatic species and habitats.
Term: This is a one-year position, with annual renewals possible.
