The Camp Long Environmental Learning Center is recruiting for an enthusiastic and engaging Summer Survival Day Camp Educator to join their team this summer.

Camp Long runs a popular summer survival day camp for middle school students. Located in West Seattle, this 68 acre park offers visitors an opportunity to enjoy nature, hike in the forest, camp overnight in rustic cabins, rock climb, and learn about natural history.

Pay Rate: $17.00/hr; paid biweekly

Summer Day Camp Schedule:

  • July 1, 2019 – August 30, 2019 (July 4th Off)
  • Monday – Friday, 35-40 hours per week
  • Available shifts will be 7 to 8 hours per day between 8:00am – 5:00pm (subject to change based on business need)
  • Mandatory pre-camp training will be offered in June

Basic Duties:

  • Lead hands on community building and outdoor education activities for students age 12-14.
  • Guide 15 youth, ages 12-14, by yourself and with a co-leader as they learn survival skills and how to work with their peers to accomplish their goals
  • Serve as a positive role model for campers and use positive behavior guidance strategies
  • Maintain a safe, friendly and fun learning environment for all participants including LGBTQ youth, students of color, students of different abilities, and youth with diverse life experiences.
  • Facilitate student energy and engagement while assisting with and leading moderately strenuous activities such as hiking, rock climbing, and exploring the park.
  • Be flexible, flexible, flexible

Requirements:

  • At least 1 year experience working with youth, preferably in an outdoor setting
  • One year of college level education, preferably with course work in the natural sciences and/or education
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Valid WA driver’s license and First Aid/CPR certification or ability to obtain
  • Commitment to work full summer program
  • Understanding of social justice topics and willingness to strive towards a program that is safe for all Seattle youth
  • If hired, must pass criminal background check
  • If hired, must provide proof of eligibility to work in the US and valid government issued ID
  • If hired, must sign up for direct deposit with either checking or savings account or Payroll Paycard

Desired Skills/Abilities:

  • Experience working with a diversity of youth
  • Experience with outdoor education including challenge courses, rock walls, and camping skills
  • Willingness to lean in to difficult situations and conversations
  • Knowledge of youth development and teaching methods
  • Ability to develop creative lesson plans
  • Enthusiasm and energy!
