Administrative Intern 1
Part-Time/Non-Permanent
The Capital and Asset Management Program (CAMP) is responsible for managing the agency’s Capital Budget and associated projects; this positions will be primarily focused on capital projects that have an “in-water work” requirement. The position will assist the CAMP project lead biologist in projects that contribute to the agency’s mission to preserve, protect and perpetuate, and preserve fish, wildlife, and ecosystems while providing sustainable fish and wildlife recreational and commercial opportunities.

The primary purpose of this position is to assist with the monitoring of in-water capital and maintenance projects at agency-owned facilities. This includes assisting in de-fishing work areas, collecting water samples, and assisting hatchery staff in the safe handling and care of juvenile and adult salmonids, often on active construction sites. The position will also assist lead biologists in construction permit filings and acquisition. The position will assist in stream surveys and data collection, data entry, and equipment preparation and maintenance.

Duties

Assist lead biologists in fish removals and sampling work areas.

  • Perform Seining, sampling, and removal of aquatic species from active construction areas.

Assist project biologist in acquiring necessary environmental permits to perform project(s).

  • Assist in filling out permit forms and delivery and pick-up to and from appropriate regulatory agencies and environmental labs.

Perform environmental sampling in support of maintaining good water quality and site conditions.

  • Perform water quality sampling including pH, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen, or other site samples.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • HS diploma or GED and is currently a college student (enrolled and pursuing a degree at an institution of higher education) majoring in Biology, environmental studies, or natural resource related degree.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work in water and carry 40 pounds over uneven terrain.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

  • Highly motivated.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office package including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Pursuing a degree in natural resource management, fisheries, biology or similar discipline.

This position is in the bargaining unit represented by the Washington Association of Fish and Wildlife Professionals (WAFWP) and is subject to the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife, and WAFWP.

Working Conditions:
Work is generally performed at various field locations throughout Washington under adverse environmental conditions and requires the ability to operate pick up trucks, standard laboratory equipment (including water quality probes), to record accurate and legible field notes by hand or digital devices and operate a digital camera including the ability to download to a computer. The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: the ability to work in water and carry 40 pounds on uneven terrain and work on active construction sites including around large equipment. This positions work schedule ranges, up to 40 hours per week and alternative work schedules including overnight stays are likely. This position requires substantial field time and travel throughout Washington – long field days and some overnight stays are likely. Start and end date will be flexible to coincide with schooling end and start.
