POSITION PROFILE:

The Northeast Region of the Department of Natural Resources is currently recruiting for four Non-Perm, State Uplands Foresters (Natural Resources Specialist 1) to join our team of Silviculture Foresters.

Are you someone who loves the outdoors, and is passionate about natural resource forester opportunities in Washington State?  If you love working in the outdoors, appreciate a remote natural environment, and have good practical field skills with a proven ability for working in a small team, then this is the job for you.

These positions will assist the Silviculture Foresters in implementing sound ecological forest management that generates revenue while improving forest health and habitat.  Position responsibilities include assisting in the layout of timber sales.  This work includes, locating and marking timber sale unit boundaries, tree marking, GPS mapping, locating and delineating riparian buffers or other sensitive areas, road layout, cruising, and developing detailed summary reports.  Additional silvicultural duties include conducting stand surveys, preparing and administering pre-commercial thinning, tree planting and fuels reduction contracts under the agency’s forest health program.  In addition, this position will assess the health of stands and recommend silvicultural prescriptions and harvest strategies.

• Knowledge and experience with eastside forest management objectives and silvicultural practices.
• Ability to think critically, analyze, and make decisions in a dynamic and sometimes stressful environment, and work both independently and as part of a team to reach Agency and District goals.
• Ability to devise own work methods and complete tasks with little direction.
• Knowledge of and ability to correctly use topographic maps, aerial photos, compass, clinometer, laser rangefinder, and other forestry tools.
• Ability to use GPS technology to map unit boundaries, roads, sensitive areas, and other features.
• Ability to use ESRI ArcGIS software to produce maps and analyze data.
• Personal computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel with aptitude for learning new software as needed.
• Knowledge of and ability to identify tree damaging insects and pathogens present in Eastern Washington and their impacts on forest health.
• An understanding of logging and forest road layout.

This level of knowledge and skill is typically achieved with:

• A Bachelor’s degree in Forestry or a closely related Natural Resource field
• A two year Associate Degree in Forestry or a closely related Natural Resource field and two years of professional experience; or
• Four years of experience as a professional forester.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

• Professional experience in Washington’s eastside forests.
• Training in eastside silviculture prescription development.
• Training in timber sale preparation and documentation.
• Knowledge of Agency policies and Forest Practices requirements for Eastern Washington.
• Knowledge of contracts and contract management.
• Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills as demonstrated by the ability to resolve conflicts, write effectively, and communicate with diverse groups both internal and external.
• The ability to pass the work capacity test at the arduous level.
• Knowledge of the Lynx Habitat Management Plan and lynx interim guidelines.
• Knowledge of the Loomis State Forest Landscape Management Plan and Final Environmental Impact Statement.
• Knowledge of DNR timber cruising methods.
• Forest fire prevention and suppression techniques, as well as prescribed fire knowledge.

SPECIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Ability to work on uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
• The incumbent in this position is required to travel.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function.  Employees who drive for state business, whether in a state or privately-owned vehicle, are required to possess a valid license as defined in policy PO02-006 and abide by all other driver responsibility requirements.
• Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
