The Seattle Department of Transportation is seeking a graduate student to assist with the development of the next iteration of SDOT’s Electric Vehicle Charging in the Right-of-way Permit Pilot and related electric mobility policies. This intern will take a calculated approach to synthesizing existing research and policy to develop pilot guidelines and identify potential curbside Electric Vehicle (EV) charging sites with input from a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

Educational Benefit to Student:

  • Take a clinical approach to researching and informing the development of an electric mobility pilot program and related policies;
  • Coordinate with a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders to regularly collect and address feedback;
  • Conduct and/or synthesize existing market research, environmental impact analysis, and policy related to electric mobility and associated emerging technologies;
  • Apply the principles set forth in key city policies including the Climate Action Plan and Race & Social Justice Initiative;
  • Create and present results and recommendations via written, oral, and PowerPoint presentation.
 Job Responsibilities:
  • Conduct market research, policy synthesis, idea generation, and associated impact analysis as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to regularly collect and address feedback.
  • Create and present results and recommendations via written, oral, and PowerPoint presentation(s).
  • Conduct field work, document existing conditions, verify data.
  • Attend meetings, trainings, and other general tasks.
 Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Must be enrolled in an accredited educational program preferably studying: Urban Planning, Transportation Planning, Public Policy, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. Graduate interns must maintain a satisfactory GPA of 3.0 or higher for the duration of the internship.

Experience:

 Required Qualifications

  • Experience and/or interest in electric mobility and emerging transportation technology;
  • Experience synthesizing a variety of research and feedback into useful summaries and recommendations;
  • Experience forging partnerships and managing a diverse set of stakeholders;
  • Proven ability to work well independently and in groups;
  • Interest in furthering the goals of Seattle’s Climate Action Plan and Race & Social Justice Initiative;
  • Proficiency with spreadsheet, word processing, presentation, and project management software;
  • Strong writing and communication skills with the ability to create professional deliverables and share them effectively with diverse audiences.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience researching innovative pilots, programs, or policies related to electric mobility and/or emerging transportation technology;
  • Experience working directly with members of the public, community based organizations, and public agencies;
  • Experience with quantitative data analysis using Excel, GIS, and/or other platforms and using this analysis to support policy development;
  • Demonstrated ability define problems, identify potential solutions, develop implementation strategies, and evaluate outcomes;
  • Interest in leveraging emerging technology solutions (including electric, automated, and shared mobility solutions) to solve transportation challenges.
 Additional Information:
Start/End Dates:  Intern will start in late June/early July and end in mid-September.

Schedule:  Intern will work 40 hours/week.  Work hours can be scheduled between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. and may work some weekends and/or evenings.

Salary:  Graduates will be paid $20.30/hour.
