Position DescriptionThe City of Tacoma Public Works Department is looking for an Active Transportation Coordinator to join the traffic engineering and transportation planning group.  The successful applicant will work closely with internal staff (planning, engineering, sustainability), external agencies, and advocacy groups to implement active transportation goals and policies outlined in the Transportation Master Plan.  The incumbent will also be expected to be an integral member of the traffic engineering and transportation planning group, which is responsible for planning, coordinating, and design support for complex transportation planning, traffic engineering, and capital improvement projects.  The ideal candidate will have experience in other areas of active transportation and project management, including traffic safety, right-of-way design, and grant funding support on complex projects and programs. The selected candidate will be hard-working and approachable, and will be able to organize and express ideas through excellent oral and written communication to a wide variety of audiences.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead long-range planning efforts for active transportation, including providing input to the City’s Transportation Master Plan
  • Support capital project design and development by facilitating the inclusion of appropriately-designed active transportation facilities in new projects and plans.
  • Act as the liaison to the City’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Technical Advisory Group.
  • Support Transportation Demand Management (TDM) and Commute Trip Reduction (CTR) programs within the City of Tacoma, including developing policies which support increased utilization of these programs and implementation of the CTR law.
  • Collaborate with various departments and agencies to discuss and implement policies and programs that support the City’s active transportation goals.
  • Represent the City at various private/public organizations and stakeholder committees that support active transportation and trail systems.
  • Lead public events and support various active community initiatives and events that promote healthier lifestyles.
  • Identify and secure funding resources to supplement various City programs and services related to the promotion and education of urban transportation solutions, mass transportation enhancements and pedestrian accommodations.
  • Lead and/or supervise various groups to support projects, including internal Planning staff and external consultants.
  • Build and maintain an innovative network of key partners across sectors such as governments, industry, business, utilities, and academia to support sustainable infrastructure practices in Tacoma, as part of sustainable transportation strategy.

Collectively, these responsibilities are expected to initiate/develop/deliver projects, create/promote innovative programs, and create/support events that increase use of alternative transportation modes such as walking, biking, scooting, skating, carpooling/sharing and transit.

Four-year college degree in urban planning, transportation planning, environmental affairs, public administration or related areas preferred

AND

Two years managing a mobility/active transportation program.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
Candidates who have worked for or with a municipal agency.

LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS AND OTHER LEGAL REQUIREMENTS:
Washington State Driver License at time of appointment to the position.
