Position Available – Stewardship Coordinator

Puget Soundkeeper (Soundkeeper) seeks qualified applicants for a full-time Stewardship Coordinator position. The Stewardship Coordinator will manage the organization’s Marine Debris Project and oversee all volunteer recruitment, training, and stewardship. This staff member participates in on-the-water patrols and acts as primary coordinator for all shoreline clean-up activities. They will also participate in direct outreach opportunities to new and existing audiences and present information on Soundkeeper’s Water Quality Education initiatives. The Stewardship Coordinator manages an AmeriCorps Service Member for 10-month service terms and oversees all recruitment and training duties.

Puget Soundkeeper’s mission is to protect and preserve the waters of Puget Sound. Soundkeeper works to meaningfully decrease pollutants reaching the Sound by monitoring water quality, enforcing clean water laws, improving policies and regulations, preventing pollution and cleaning up our local waterways. The successful applicant will demonstrate a commitment to this work and will be called upon to represent the organization to donors, vendors, agencies and collaborating organizations. This is a full-time position with paid holidays, vacation and sick time accrual, medical, dental, and vision insurance, and an employee-funded 403(b) plan.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and oversee shoreline clean-up events and act as the regional coordinator for the International Coastal Cleanup
  • Act as supervisor for Soundkeeper’s AmeriCorps Service Member
  • Oversee volunteer recruitment and training efforts for on-the-water patrols, Water Quality Monitoring projects, and Soundkeeper’s member and fundraising events
  • Participate in boat and kayak clean-ups, ensuring all volunteers have a safe and educational experience
  • Deliver Water Quality Education at outreach and clean-up events, and help develop tools/curriculum to deliver science-based educational messaging
  • Act as primary contact for all volunteer opportunities (corporate, youth, etc.)
  • Facilitate and steward organizational partnerships and represent Puget Soundkeeper in local coalitions and regional EcoNets
  • Develop and maintain Marine Debris program materials, and contribute stewardship content for newsletters, blog, Social Media channels and Soundkeeper’s website
  • Assist in the preparation of project-specific funding applications and direct outreach to corporate sponsorship prospects

Preferred Qualifications

  • Environmental Science or Sustainability undergraduate degree or equivalent workplace experience
  • 2-4 years of experience in volunteer coordination and oversight
  • Kayaking and/or on-the-water activities experience and desire to work outside in varying weather conditions
  • Experience developing effective project materials and identifying key audiences, messaging, and tactics that support project goals
  • Strong communications skills with an ability to communicate clearly in person and in writing to both internal and external audiences
  • Experience in cross-cultural communications, comfort speaking to diverse audiences, strong interest in advancing equity in the environmental movement, and an understanding of systemic barriers to participation
  • Growth mindset, interest in trying new things, learning from mistakes, and developing leadership and collaboration skills
  • Independent self-starter who works well in a collaborative, fast-paced environment
  • Able to manage a variety of projects with an excellent attention to detail and logistical planning
  • Interest in storytelling and a creative thinker. Ability to share scientific research, studies, and data to audiences of all ages.
  • Some experience with environmental issues, especially relating to water quality and Puget Sound topics is preferred. Aptitude for quickly grasping technical information and the ability to translate scientific data into compelling materials for general audiences.
  • Experience with standard office software, database management and social media tools
  • Passion for Soundkeeper’s mission
  • Willing to work some evenings and weekends as required

Compensation

  • Salary range $40,000 – 48,000 depending on experience (full time-exempt position)
