Position Title: Fisheries Technician – 450 HR (6 positions)

Position Summary:

The Kalispel Tribe Fisheries Conservation Program is recruiting six Fisheries Technician interns from June 24th through September 13th, 2019.  This position is a temporary developmental position where the incumbent will likely be required to work long, unusual hours, weekends, and occasionally holidays. This work is primarily performed outdoors and requires lifting, pulling, and hauling in all kinds of weather conditions on variable terrain.

Duties and Responsibilities:

This position will primarily conduct instream backpack electrofishing to remove invasive fish species (90% of time). Other tasks (10% of the time) may include assisting with stream piscicide applications, fisheries habitat surveys, environmental DNA sampling, and the reintroduction of native fish populations (collection and translocation). Work history must reflect excellent attendance.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current driver’s license.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 70lbs
  • Ability to work outdoors in remote settings and inclement weather on uneven ground

Desired Qualifications:

  • Have basic knowledge of standard field methods and data collection techniques relating to fisheries work including species identification, their habitats and life histories, scientific terminology and techniques, habitat assessment, computer programs (Access, Excel, and Word) and organizing data.
  • Have knowledge of habitat restoration and enhancement techniques and safe use of hand tools, chain saws, portable winches, and comfortably work with and around heavy equipment.
  • Experience with fixed station and mobile fish acoustic and radio telemetry desirable; fixed station set-up, operation, and testing, mobile tracking, and recording geospatial data on GPS.

Duty/Housing Location:

Duties are performed out of the Kalispel Tribe headquarters in Usk, WA. Housing is not provided for this position, although free transportation between Spokane, WA and Usk, WA is available.

Terms of Employment:

One AmeriCorps member will complete a term of service (length dependent on commitment of hours), starting June 24th through September 13th, 2019. The member must complete a minimum of 450 service hours by the end of their term.

Program Benefits:

  • $3,400 living allowance dispersed on a monthly basis, a $1,566.14 education award upon completion of the 450 hours of service. The incumbent will receive training in Wilderness First Aid & CPR.
  • The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing their own food. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal and driving background check.
  • The member will not engage in any prohibited activities as stated in the Member Service Agreement.
