Environmental Educator (WSC AmeriCorps)
Description
Snohomish Conservation District, a small state conservation agency located in Lake Stevens, Washington, is looking for an enthusiastic and dependable educator to present in-classroom environmental lessons and outdoor field trips for grades 3-12.
The educator will teach multiple environmental education lessons per day in schools throughout Snohomish County and Camano Island. The educator will also engage youth and families through interactive/educational booths at community fairs, school STEM and parent nights, youth environmental service learning (serving with youth and families to plant trees and native plants at local restoration sites), teacher workshops, and green schoolyard support.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in education, science education, environmental science or related field.
• 6+ months experience working as an educator with K-12 youth.
• Knowledge of environmental subject matter (especially storm water and watersheds) or a sincere desire to
study and learn.
• Excellent classroom and behavior management skills.
• Ability to adapt teaching style and content to meet the diverse needs of students.
• Strong public speaking skills: loud voice with clear enunciation and pacing- presenting in a confident, engaging
manner that draws in the audience.
• Preferred: experience with NGSS and Common Core standards.
• Preferred: experience in school classrooms
Requirements:
• Reliable transportation to and from our office and clean driving record. We have government vehicles at our
Lake Stevens office for use while teaching. When a personal vehicle is used, reimbursement will be provided at
the IRS-approved mileage rate. All travel time to schools is counted as service hours.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to check email daily.
• Demonstrated commitment to professionalism, cultural competency, and equity in education.
• Ability to work collaboratively and openly communicate with team mates
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50lbs.
• Ability to self-direct workload and priorities on a daily basis.
• Competency with Microsoft Office: Excel, Word, Publisher, and PowerPoint.
Schedule: The term of this position runs 9/3/2019-7/15/2020. The environmental educator will serve 40 hours/week, Monday through Friday (with occasional weekend and evening commitments). Exact daily start and end times will vary to accommodate school schedules, but service hours will typically fall between 7am – 5pm. A typical weekly schedule during the school year will consist of 3-4 days teaching at schools with an office day for prep and other duties.
