Example of Duties

• Develop and support watershed management/total maximum daily load plans, and TMDL 5-year reviews. Work with basin and watershed advisory groups, soil conservation districts, municipalities and industry and other stakeholders to complete DEQ’s statutory responsibilities.
• Support and develop implementation plans/strategies/projects for watershed restoration/TMDL plans.
• Coordinate, collect and disseminate water quality information with stakeholders, local, state and federal partners.

Minimum QualificationsPossession of a Bachelor’s degree in the physical or biological sciences, political science, business or public administration, engineering, or related natural resources management field OR, any combination of education and/or experience equivalent to a typical four (4) year Bachelor’s degree. For example: Successful completion of sixty (60) semester hours of study, including twenty-four (24) semester hours in a subject required for the specific discipline, is equivalent to two (2) years of undergraduate education; and/or experience performing routine duties in completing multiple tasks such as policy research, data collection, interpretation, analysis and preparation of reports and written documents for at least two (2) years can substitute for one (1) year of college. AND, At least four (4) years’ experience managing and implementing, projects or component(s) of programs that are environmental, regulatory, or administrative in nature, where you were required to routinely perform program or project planning; provide technical assistance to staff, special interest groups and the public; and provide policy and/or regulatory interpretation and/or development. OR, Possession of a Master’s degree in any of the above fields AND at least two (2) years’ professional experience managing and implementing, or overseeing projects or component(s) of programs that are environmental in nature, where you were required to routinely perform program or project planning; provide technical assistance to staff, special interest groups and the public; and provide policy and/or regulatory interpretation and/or development.

Specialty Minimum Qualifications (required for this position):

• MQ3131 – Water Quality – Describe your knowledge of water quality and your work experience in water pollution monitoring, estimation or control such as: reviewing, designing or implementing; surface water quality monitoring projects, watershed, TMDL evaluation, riparian area, aquatic habitat, water quality, source water assessments, or environmental assessments, pollutant source assessments including municipal, industrial and storm water point sources and non-point source activities such as forestry, mining, agriculture, and grazing. Typically met by possession of a college degree in Natural Resource Management, Forestry, Fisheries, Biology, Chemistry, Limnology, Hydrology, Environmental Science or closely related field; OR education and experience equivalent to an undergraduate degree; AND two (2) years of work experience in water pollution monitoring, estimation or control such as: reviewing, designing or implementing; surface water quality monitoring projects, watershed, TDML evaluation, riparian area, aquatic habitat, source water assessments, water quality or environmental assessments, pollutant source assessments including municipal, industrial and storm water point sources and nonpoint source activities such as forestry, mining, agriculture, and grazing.
• MQ3136 – Scientific/Technical Report Preparation and Presentation – Requires at least four (4) years of experience preparing scientific or technical reports and at least two (2) years of experience presenting scientific, technical, or regulatory information to students, the general public, local governments, and professional organizations.

• Ability to sit and work on a computer for 2-4 hours at a time
• Ability to reach and bend for filing purposes
• Some periods of heavy reading and typing required
• Some travel may be required
• Must have a valid driver’s license
• Ability to climb ladders, staircases, work on uneven terrain
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds over rough terrain
• Ability to work in adverse or inclement weather
• Ability to work in extreme hot or cold temperatures both outside and inside
• Ability to work on elevated instrument platforms, ladders, etc.
• Must be able to swim and perform field monitoring work without on-site assistance or supervision
• Occasional travel required
• May work in vicinity of loud noise
• May be required to travel and stay overnight in remote areas
• May come into contact with hazardous waste/materials
• Eyesight needs to be 20/20 (as corrected) to observe field compliance
