IBM Research is seeking a Graduate Summer Intern focusing on creating and testing a long-term (100 years) environmental model for lake ecosystems, as part of The Jefferson Project at Lake George, a collaborative research project.

You will be part of a project team that is focused on end-to-end environmental applications in an Internet of Things (IoT) framework, ranging from sensors to Big Data analytics. You are expected to work with a multi-disciplinary project team building a model for exploring how the long-term health of a lake depends on climate, and watershed factors such as population, efficiency of septic and waste water treatment, and shifts in vegetation. Example tasks include designing and evaluating the behavior of models against measurements, and performing parameter and sensitivity studies.

Skills requirements include a demonstrated experience with ordinary differential equations and systems modeling, proficient in a programming language with a syntax similar to C/C++. Preferred experience includes a background in numerical analysis, modeling, and nonlinear system dynamics.

Applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree and be working towards a Master’s or Ph.D. in Civil, Mechanical or Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
