Job Summary

AECOM’s Environment and Planning Group includes a Water Science Team consisting of water quality scientists, hydromorphologists, hydrologists and hydroecologists. The water environment team specialises in natural water systems and offers a wide range of water science, hydrology and environmental services to private and public sector clients. This includes water and sediment quality surveys and studies, hydromorphological and hydroecological surveys and assessment, river, lake, wetland and terrestrial ecological surveys, ecosystem services assessment, ecosystem rehabilitation, catchment management services, WFD appraisals and impact assessments of new developments.

AECOM’s busy water environment team is seeking to recruit a Water Scientist to assist with a range of survey and assessment projects. The projects undertaken by the team are wide ranging in terms of sector, technical scope and geographical location, including opportunities for working internationally. The majority of our work is in the fluvial environment, although a significant proportion is also focused on estuaries, lakes and the marine environment, and so experience of these environments is beneficial.

Nationally our Water Science team comprises 8 staff with specialisms in hydrology, water / sediment quality, hydromorphology and hydroecology. We are now looking to enhance and grow this team with individuals with a sound technical background in the aquatic environment that share our enthusiasm and determination to support our expanding workload.

Our clients are from the private and public sector and our leading UK clients include the Environment Agency, Highways England, River Trusts, numerous Local Authorities, private commercial developers and planners, as well as overseas clients.

We have an impressive portfolio of water science projects including technical investigation, restoration projects, and impact and WFD assessment for major national and international infrastructure projects. A selection of our current and recent projects includes:

  • Developing a modelling approach to inform management decisions at water level dependent designated sites;
  • Developing a guide and decision support tool so that users can make informed decisions at barriers to fish and eel migration, as well as producing the upcoming Fish and Eel Pass Guide to enable safe passage at in channel structures such as pumping stations and weirs;
  • Developing a Restoration Plan for the River Ver and Verulamium Lake in St Albans;
  • Deriving catchment improvements for the River Rede, to improve water quality and ecological health of the river;
  • Undertaking environmental assessments of the potential effects of drought permit on lowland chalk rivers to inform suitable mitigation;
  • Undertaking an assessment of options to improve three community fishing and amenity ponds in Southampton;
  • Undertaking desk studies, consultation, water quality monitoring, and site surveys to assess the impact of major new infrastructure, industrial, residential and commercial developments including WFD assessments and Environmental Permitting; and
  • Developing water quality monitoring programmes and pollution prevention strategies for the construction of major infrastructure projects (e.g. Glyn Rhonwy Pumped Storage Scheme, A1 Dishforth to Barton Highway Improvement Scheme, Melton Mowbray Distributor Road); and
  • Producing a Feasibility Study to advise Birmingham Airport on the most appropriate ‘real-time’ water quality monitors.

Job Responsibilities:

The appropriate level of technical expertise is required in order that the Job / Project Accountabilities listed below can be carried out to the necessary standard:

  • Ability to work collaboratively and iteratively within a multi-disciplinary team;
  • Water quality studies (e.g. baseline studies, environmental impact assessment, nutrient loading studies and pollution studies including monitoring and modelling);
  • Hydrological investigations (e.g. flood, drought and water resource allocation);
  • Hydroecological studies (e.g. assessing the effects of schemes on aquatic organisms such as salmonids, freshwater pearl mussels, invertebrates and macrophytes);
  • WFD / Environmental Compliance studies;
  • EIA (e.g. highway, rail, utilities, power generation including renewables, mixed use/commercial/residential and other development types);
  • Pollution prevention advice including preparing Water Management Plans, acting as Environmental Clerk of Works, and developing sustainable treatment trains;
  • Applications for various permissions (e.g. Environmental Permits for flood risk activities and discharges, Water Abstraction / Impoundment Licences, and Land Drainage Consents);
  • Statutory and non-statutory stakeholder engagement and management;
  • Be aware of and understand the AECOM IMS procedures, their importance and their application to projects; and
  • Project management, technical proposal and report writing.

Minimum Requirements

To be successful in this role we’re looking for applicants from experienced professionals who have worked in a similar role. They should:

  • Be qualified to degree level (or equivalent) in relevant subject (e.g. geography, environmental science, hydrology, hydro-chemistry, ecology etc.);
  • Have strong analytical and numerical skills;
  • Have a good level of understanding of aquatic systems and interplay between various disciplines (hydrology, water quality, hydromorphology, hydroecology etc.);
  • Have experience in water and environment sectors such as hydrology (low flows and flood risk), water quality and hydroecology;
  • Be proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Experience of undertaking environmental impact and WFD assessments, including in support of EIA projects;
  • Field surveying (e.g. catchment walkovers, fluvial audits, water quality sampling, lake coring etc.);
  • Have experience working with water, utilities, regulators and third sector organisations;
  • Have experience of bid preparation and drafting technical proposals;
  • Have strong project management skills;
  • Have excellent report writing;
  • Modelling experience desirable (e.g. ISIS TuFlow, Mike powered by DHI, SIMCAT)
  • Have experience of producing environmental monitoring specifications.
  • Have experience using GIS and preparation of figures and presentations; and
  • Have strong communication skills and experience of stakeholder engagement and consultation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Be qualified to degree level (or equivalent) in relevant subject (e.g. geography, environmental science, hydrology, hydro-chemistry, ecology etc.);
  • An MSc or PhD in a relevant subject (as described above);
  • Membership of an appropriate professional body (e.g. CIWEM, BHS, IEEM, IFM etc.); and
  • A valid UK driving licence.
