POSITION SUMMARY:
The Sustainability Planner works collaboratively with administration, faculty, staff and students to develop, manage, coordinate and promote effective sustainability initiatives to reduce the University’s impact on the environment. Responsibilities include educating the University community about sustainability and coordinating campus programming and activities related to sustainability; performing research with regards to sustainability; annual reporting.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- LEED AP required
- A valid Florida driver’s license is required
- Must be proficient in reading, writing and communicating in English
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Implementation liaison for the American College and University Presidential Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) and Second Nature at the University to include responsibility for maintaining the public reporting profile for the institution, submitting reports for the institution, and acting as the liaison between Second Nature and the Chancellor. Coordinates and compiles University data for the ongoing Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, & Rating System (STARS) self-assessment program and enters data from campus organizations into the STARS reporting tool for submittal to AASHE. Conduct annual greenhouse gas inventories and strive to meet Climate Action Plan goals with strategies being evaluated annually.
- Serves a liaison between various campus entities to assure communication and resource coordination for sustainability programs and projects. Improves the effectiveness of the University’s sustainability practices by monitoring best practices related to sustainability at the University’s benchmark peer institutions and other select institutions and making recommendations for new sustainability programming and modifications to existing programs. Assists in defining sustainability goals and tracks performance metrics to assess program effectiveness. Works with all elements of the residential and academic campus community, including students, faculty, and staff to promote an understanding and awareness of sustainability issues by coordinating informational presentations and promoting energy and water conservation, waste minimization, sustainable building and landscape design, alternative transportation, procurement of green products, etc.
- Works with the Sustainable Initiatives Coordinator and other Student Government Executive branch members, along with the Garden Club, Food Recovery Network, Student Environmental Awareness Society (SEAS), Environmental Science & Sustainability Club (ESSC), and other student clubs focused on sustainability by facilitating and coordinating student sustainability initiatives and related funding. Serves on the Student Green Energy Fund (SGEF) and the Clean Energy Resource Conservation Commission (CERCC) committee meetings and implements recommendations made including promoting and focusing student enthusiasm and energy towards sustainability projects, as well as appropriate funding of long-term sustainable success projects. Serves on the USF Intercampus Facilities Sustainability Roundtable, City of St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce Sustainability Task Force, Tampa Bay Environmental Professionals, U.S. Green Building Council Florida Gulf Coast Chapter, St. Petersburg Energy Roundtable and other committees as assigned and attends meetings with external organizations to represent the University on sustainability issues. Work towards developing partnerships with external organizations and managing current partnerships with organizations.
- Manages the energy monitoring system project to make sure dashboards and meters are being maintained and data is collected and stored properly through cloud hosting. Handle all LEED material and other sustainable infrastructure material on the University’s behalf, as well as act as University liaison with green building consultants, for campus green building design, building commissioning and LEED project certification. Coordinate sustainable design and green development projects on campus such as the addition of on-site renewable energy; includes monitoring solar energy production and schedule maintenance and repair of arrays when needed.
- Assist staff, students and faculty through continued sustainability education and research through guest lectures, working with student interns, student-group class projects, researching technical journals, attending professional meetings, etc. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as directed. Research and identifies grant-writing, sponsorships, rebate programs, and other funding opportunities in support of expanded campus sustainability efforts.
- Performs other duties as required, assigned, or deemed necessary by the Construction Project Manager. Coordinates with and provides assistance to Facilities Services as appropriate related to implementing energy conservation programs.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
Requires a Bachelor’s degree in an environmentally-related discipline such as sustainability studies; physical, biological, or health sciences; engineering, or an appropriately related field and three years of experience in coordinating sustainability projects and/or developing programming. A Master’s degree in one of the listed disciplines may substitute for the required experience.
PREFERRED:
Master’s degree in an environmentally- related discipline. Experience working with sustainability and/or environmental programs in higher education.
SPECIAL SKILLS/TRAINING:
- Certs or knowledge in WELL AP, PMP, CEM, ENV SP, ISSP preferred.
- Familiarity with AASHE STARS, GHG reporting, other reporting platforms.
- Familiarity with Living Building Challenge.
