In the Research Group of Sustainable Cities and Everyday Practices, Danish Building Research Institute at the Faculty of Engineering and Science, AAU-Copenhagen campus, three PhD stipends are available within the general research program Planning and Development. These stipends are open for appointment from 1 September 2019.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The transition to a low-carbon society include new prosumer roles linking renewable energy production and consumption by the use of smart technologies. To guide this low-carbon transition, new theory development on the role of technological systems in everyday life is needed. The project called eCAPE will contribute to this by further developing theories of practice in three directions:
- The importance of gender and social structures in reproducing and changing practices
- The role of the ethical consumer in developing new practices
- The inclusion of non-humans as carriers and performers of practices.
The three PhD project will deal with different aspect of the project:
- The first PhD project will make use of unique Danish data possibilities, consisting of combined register data, actual residential energy consumption data and survey data, to analyze aspects of energy consumption related to gender differences, social structures and ethical consumption using statistical methods.
- The second PhD project will work qualitatively, with interview or focus groups, including aspects of gender, social structures and questions of ethical consumption in relation the development of new practices.
- The third PhD project will work qualitatively with understandings of how to conceptualizing the relation between non-humans and humans in the performance of practices when introducing new smart technologies in homes.
Candidates for all three positions are expected to have a relevant social science education e.g. within sociology, geography, economy, political science or anthropology. For the quantitative candidate documented qualifications within statistical methods, including the use of statistical programs such as Stata or R is required. For the two qualitative candidates competences in the performance of qualitative methods are required, as well as documented skills in Danish language at a proficiency level. Knowledge of energy consumption, consumer research and theories of practices is not a requirement, but all candidates should have an interest in requiring competences within these fields during their PhD study. eCAPE is a project financed by an advanced ERC grant. PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master’s degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.
The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science will make a decision for allocating the stipend.
