GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This position will design, implement, and administer sustainability projects and programs as a means of fostering and enhancing a campus culture of sustainability, and advancing Pitzer College as a sustainability leader in higher education. By collaborating with students, staff and faculty to implement sustainability initiatives, energy efficiency upgrades, and other related projects, the Assistant Director of Sustainability will drive reductions in the College’s greenhouse gas emissions to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

Essential Functions
This position description defines the essential or fundamental job duties of the employment position. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Management and Reporting
a. Design, implement, enhance, administer and evaluate the College’s current and future sustainability projects and programs.
i. Programming includes food waste composting, food recovery donations, dining Greenware usage, environmental job board, and annual ReRoom.
b. Manage all program budgets, personnel and resources. Includes managing revenues and expenses of annual programming and projects.
c. Compile, track, analyze and report on effectiveness of sustainability efforts and programming.
i. Submit annual progress evaluations to Second Nature as part of The Presidents’ Climate Leadership Commitments.
ii. Lead reporting efforts to AASHE for STARS certification; share STARS report with The Princeton Review and Sierra Magazine for inclusion in their rankings.
d. Present findings and recommendations for sustainability efforts in various formats, including technical reports and presentations to senior administrators, students, faculty and other campus groups. Provide updates on the College’s progress toward achieving carbon neutrality.
e. Monitor building operating systems and utilities, and provide reports as required.
2. Communications and Engagement
a. Develop and maintain regular engagement and support for sustainability efforts with students, faculty and staff offices. Foster a culture of knowledge about and support for sustainability on campus.
b. Develop and implement a communication and marketing strategy utilizing a variety of formats to regularly promote campus sustainability initiatives and projects and reflect Pitzer’s core values. Communication efforts should target all relevant constituents and partners via various mediums, including presentations, workshops, email, social media, newsletters, etc.
i. Collaborate with the Communications office staff, particularly with outreach to publications and media outlets.
c. Develop, enhance and oversee the College’s sustainability web pages and social media accounts.
d. Represent Pitzer’s sustainability programs to the public by attending professional meetings and conferences, and interfacing with external organizations.
e. Serve as the primary contact for internal and external inquiries and requests for information regarding campus sustainability efforts, recommendations and feedback from the campus community and media requests.
3. Campus and Community Partnerships
a. Mentor, train and support students and student organizations to establish programs aimed at promoting sustainability on campus (e.g. Green Bike Program)
b. Initiate and maintain collaboration with faculty, the Community Engagement Center staff, Student Affairs staff, student organizations and other internal constituents, to identify and coordinate opportunities to support and enhance academic and co-curricular engagements for sustainability.
c. Actively seek and build partnerships for off-campus co-curricular opportunities for students.
d. Collaborate with College Advancement staff for donor and fundraising opportunities.
e. Chair the College’s Sustainability Committee.
4. Energy Efficiency Planning and Project Management
a. Identify and evaluate opportunities, provide recommendations and manage on-campus energy efficiency projects, including maintenance projects, remodel projects, and renewable energy installations.
b. Assess cost-effectiveness and technical feasibility of proposed projects.
c. Prioritize sustainability projects for funding.
d. Participate in all phases of campus facilities developments to identify, manage and implement sustainability design for consideration.
5. Budget Administration
a. Manage sustainability budget for related initiatives and projects. Process payment requests for vendors and complete hiring forms for student employees.
b. Manage student worker payroll, including reviewing and approving timesheets, scheduling student employees, and ensuring costs remain within budget.
c. Monitor budget and track expenses for Pitzer’s Green Initiative Fund.
d. Actively seek and obtain grants, rebates, donations and other alternate funding sources.
e. Implement projects and programs that demonstrably and measurably reduce costs.
6. Perform other essential duties and tasks as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility: Recruit, train, coach and supervise approximately 15 student employees and 10 volunteers to support the College’s sustainability program.

Work Hours: This is a full-time(12-month), regular, staff position working from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. These hours may vary due to needs of the College or department. Must participate in the Campus Facilities on-call after hours rotation with other department managers. May be required to work occasional evenings, weekends and holidays.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

The individual must possess knowledge, skills and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

1. Demonstrated knowledge of energy management programs and building systems, including mechanical, electrical and plumbing disciplines as it relates to sustainability and efficiency. Strong knowledge of the management of sustainability initiatives, projects and organizations, preferably in an educational environment.
2. Demonstrated effectiveness and clarity of verbal and written communication in English, both one-on-one and in groups. Strong presentation skills and ability to conduct meetings, workshops and trainings in front of small and large groups.
a. Speaks English clearly and persuasively, with an ability to convey a passion and commitment for sustainability and environmental issues.
b. Engaging and adept at communicating with individuals of diverse constituencies and backgrounds, with an appreciation for collaborative interactions. Strong networking skills.
c. Writes English with attention to spelling, grammar, accuracy and the needs of the target audience; presents numerical data effectively; articulates a compelling message; and uses various mediums of communication effectively (e.g. emails, reports, social media, etc.).
3. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, Google apps, and the ability to quickly learn other specialized software programs.
4. Prioritizes and plans work activities to satisfy deadlines and expectations, uses time efficiently and develops realistic action plans to handle multiple and concurrent projects and deadlines. Organized, detail-oriented and systematic in coordinating work with multiple internal and external stakeholders.
5. Remains open to the ideas of others, exhibits a willingness to try new things, and demonstrates maturity and composure in dealing with difficult and/or sensitive situations.
6. Work effectively both independently and as a collaborative member of the College in support of the College’s strategic vision and the department’s annual goals.
7. Ability to manage deferred maintenance projects related to sustainability.
8. Works productively and comfortably in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment. Adapts to changes, manages competing demands and deals with frequent change, interruptions, delays or unexpected events with aplomb.
9. Intercultural sensitivity, adaptability, patience, intellectual curiosity, enthusiasm for challenges, open-minded and mindful. Must have a high standard of integrity and ethics.
10. Demonstrate initiative in developing and supporting new initiatives appropriate for the position.

14. Commitment to on-going professional development to strengthen required skill set.

Education: Must have a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Policy, Natural Resources Management or a related field; OR the equivalent in additional years of relevant experience beyond the experience requirement listed below. A master’s degree is desirable.

Experience: Must have five years of experience with sustainability programming and/or project management, preferably in an educational environment. Experience must include at least two years of supervisory experience. Grant writing experience is desirable.

Licenses/Certifications: Must have a valid driver’s license, transportation, and a driving record acceptable to the college’s automobile insurer. Must have LEED Green Associate Accreditation or LEED AP accreditation, or the ability to obtain it within six months of hire.

Working Environment: Work is usually performed in an office setting with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Will occasionally work outdoors.

Physical Requirements: This position has moderate physical requirements position. Must be able to:
a) Sit or stand for prolonged periods of time;
b) Operate a computer for prolonged periods of time;
c) Communicate with others by email, in person and over the telephone;
d) Read printed materials and a computer screen;
e) Have the mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment;
f) Assist with the set-up and teardown of event tables, signage and other materials;
g) Must be able to reach overhead, grasp, pull, push, stoop, bend, twist, and lift 30 pounds from the ground to waist level without assistance; and
h) Have high stamina and mental acuity to manage a high-volume workload in a fast-paced work environment and when working on-call, evenings, and weekends.
