Yes, we fight fires across Montana and provide volunteer fire departments with resources, but are you aware that our agency also owns 5.2 million acres of state land that generates revenue for K-12 schools? Last fiscal year our Trust Lands Division distributed over forty-three million dollars. $43 million. That’s no chump change. Or how about, that we are a significant resource to assist small communities through grant funding with restoration of their natural resources. Small communities’ matter in Montana.

 

Division and Bureau Overview:  The Trust Land Management Division (TLMD) of the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) manages approximately 5.2 million surface and 6.2 subsurface acres of state trust land for the benefit of the common schools and other endowed institutions.  The Division is divided into four programs: minerals, real estate, agriculture and grazing, and forest management.  The Forest Management Bureau (FMB) provides programmatic oversight and support for the management of approximately 780,000 acres of forested state trust land.  

 

JOB OVERVIEW:    The GIS Analyst/Developer is responsible for designing and maintaining the Montana Department of Natural Resource and Conservation (DNRC)’s geographic information systems (GIS) data, geoprocessing scripts, and related applications. The position’s duties include overseeing data management to include quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC), technical consulting, training, data analysis, cross-division and cross-agency collaboration, and occasional intern oversight.  This position is responsible for designing and maintaining specialized Python-based geoprocessing scripts, methodologies and procedures to analyze, implement and automate GIS processes involving raster, vector and tabular data sets.

 

The person in this position will primarily focus their time on data management. The main responsibilities of which include creating, maintaining and managing the DNRC’s GIS and related data sets and the DNRC’s Python-based geoprocessing scripts; determining the most effective method of acquiring data or establishing links to new data sources; assisting in the design of spatial databases to ensure efficient and cost-effective collection, conversion, access, and analysis of geographic resource data for all types of users; and monitoring database performance.

 

The person in this position will also focus heavily on data analysis and processing. This includes Conduct statistical and spatial analyses of tabular and spatial GIS data and designing, developing, and implementing processes to automate geospatial analyses and produce cartographic products depicting the analyses.

 

Other duties for this position include processing requests for cartographic products and assisting in the development of training curricula for DNRC GIS applications in a variety of situations, as well as other duties as assigned.

 

This position requires professional knowledge and experience with a wide breadth of natural resource spatial data, in particular forest management related data and have experience with utilization and administration of ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise and ArcSDE for SQL Server. The person in this position should also have advanced knowledge of GIS principles, software, data management, analysis methodologies, and have knowledge and experience with project management principles and best practices.

Qualifications

:

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:  The position requires education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’ degree in Geography/GIS, Computer Science, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, or a similar academic field AND three (3) years progressive experience in a related profession. Alternative combinations of education and professional experience may be considered.

 

SPECIAL INFORMATION:  Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States.  A valid driver’s license is required with less than 12 conviction points in the most recent completed 36 months.

 

ELIGIBILITY TO WORK: In accordance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act, the person selected must produce within three days of hire documents that show authorization to work in the United States.
