Solano RCD is hiring an Environmental Education Program Coordinator to coordinate and deliver a variety of environmental education programs to school age youth through June 2020. The Program Coordinator also supports community outreach efforts and may assist with restoration and/or water quality projects managed by Solano RCD. The position will continue depending upon the candidate’s skill set and/or the continuation of grant funded projects available to Solano RCD.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Education Program Director, the Program Coordinator:

•Supports the supervision, scheduling,and training of seasonal program educators;

•Prepares for and manages field trips and classroom teaching sessions;

•Supports implementation of Solano RCD programs by coordinating, maintaining, and delivering supplies and/or equipment;

•Serves as the program or event lead for student field trips;

•Schedules lessons with teachers and assigns staff to implement lessons;

•Delivers prescribed classroom and/or field trip curriculum for the Suisun Marsh Watershed Program, the School Water Education Program (SWEP), the High School Biomonitoring Program, Watershed Explorers Program and other program opportunities as they become available. •Accurately tracks timeworked, material purchases, and mileage;

•Supports development of new or existing activities for classroom and field trip programs;

•Attends and actively participates in program trainings, planning, debrief, and staff evaluation meetings;

•Maintains fluency in current environmental issues and scientific understanding; successfully utilizes modern environmental education pedagogical practices;

•Other duties as assigned by the Education Program Director and Education Program Manager.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

•Strong classroom or group management skills;

•Strong commitment to environmental education and conservation of natural resources.

•Demonstrates excellent time management and organizational skills;

•Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of ecology and watershed science in both urban and natural settings, preferably in Solano County;

•Familiarity with the California Next Generation Science Standards and NGSS pedagogy of three-dimensional learning;

•Exhibits cultural competency and experience working with K-12 youth of all backgrounds and abilities in classroom, environmental, or outdoor educational settings;

•Self-motivated with strong communication and interpersonal skills;

•Able to work autonomously and in a group.Minimum Requirements:

•A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in ecology, biology, environmental science, K-12 education, environmental education or similar field is required.

•A minimum of two years’ experience in a related field (program coordination, program assistance, environmental or outdoor education, resource interpretation, classroom education, museum/nature center guide or docent, etc.). College experience working in these fields is applicable.

•A valid driver’s license, liability vehicle insurance, and a reliable vehicle or the ability to travel reliably.

•Applicant must have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Applicant must have the ability work outdoors in wildland settings, which may include exposure to insects and wildlife, temperature extremes, extreme or elevated terrain, and inclement weather.

 

Location:This position is currently located in the Dixon Field Office of the Solano RCD in Solano County, California.

Program Coordinators present classroom lessons at K-12 schools in all cities in the county (Rio Vista, Dixon, Vacaville, Fairfield, Suisun, Vallejo and Benicia). Field trip locations include several open spaces, city and state parks, park corridors, and privately managed areas throughout Solano County. These locations vary in terms of accessibility, elevation, size, climate, visitation/attendance and ecology.
