About the Speaker

For over three decades Dr. McKenzie-Mohr, a psychologist, has been working to incorporate scientific knowledge on behavior change into the design and delivery of community programs. He is the founder of community-based social marketing and the author of three books on the topic. One of these books, has been recommended by Time Magazine and become requisite reading for those who deliver programs to promote behavioral changes that protect the environment, promote public health and prevent injuries. He has delivered workshops internationally for over 70,000 program managers and served as an advisor on a broad array of community programs.

Who Should Attend

Those who design or fund programs to encourage individuals or businesses to engage in environmentally beneficial behaviors — such as those involved in waste reduction, water and energy efficiency, conservation, watershed protection, pollution prevention or transportation changes — will find these workshops invaluable. The workshops will also be useful for environmental education professionals who work in settings such as zoos, aquariums and parks. Public health professionals who work to foster active lifestyles, hand washing, maternal health, immunization, sun protection, workplace safety, fire safety and other health related behavioral changes, will also benefit from attending.

Introductory WorkshopREGISTER

This two-day workshop provides a comprehensive introduction to community-based social marketing and how it is being applied throughout the world to foster behaviors that protect the environment and promote health and safety. Those who attend the workshop will learn the five steps of community-based social marketing (selecting behaviors, identifying barriers, developing strategies, conducting pilots, and broad scale implementation) and be exposed to numerous case studies illustrating its use. As such, this workshop provides an in-depth exposure to community-based social marketing and provides participants with the knowledge they need to design and evaluate their own community-based social marketing programs. Further, attendees will have extensive opportunities to discuss the application of community-based social marketing to the design of actual programs. At the end of the two days participants will have acquired sufficient knowledge to use community-based social marketing to develop successful programs. This workshop, or another introductory workshop delivered by Dr. McKenzie-Mohr, is a mandatory prerequisite for attending the advanced community-based social marketing workshop that directly follows this workshop.

Advanced WorkshopREGISTER

The two-day advanced workshop provides an in-depth exploration of how community-based social marketing can be used to foster behavioral changes and provides attendees the opportunity to apply this approach to their own programs. Building on the introductory workshop, participants will be exposed to advanced topics regarding fostering behavioral changes, with a particular focus on the formation of habits that protect the environment or foster public health and safety. The workshop also addresses the effective use of social media, apps and websites. Participants will also be coached in making community-based social marketing presentations to their agency or community and will receive PowerPoint and Keynote presentations for this purpose. This workshop is restricted to individuals who have previously attended Dr. McKenzie-Mohr’s introductory workshop. If you have not yet attended an introductory workshop, reduced rates are available for attending both sessions.
